Dr. Michael Cushing, professor of physics & astronomy and director of the Ritter Planetarium and Brooks Observatory at The University of Toledo, explains that the moon will move into the shadow of the Earth and appear red in color early Friday in 13abc’s feature "Spacing Out" with Meteorologist Ross Ellet. ? A lunar eclipse is when the moon moves into the shadow of the Earth. This is the first lunar eclipse in our area since Nov. 2022. When its in totality, the moon looks crimson red because the Earth’s atmosphere filters out the blue light and only leaves the red behind! ? The viewing time for the lunar eclipse on Friday, March 14th, starts very early in the morning, around 2:30am, and ends around 3:30 am. A beautiful sight for early risers! The next lunar eclipse in our area will be in March 2026. ? #UToledo #SpacingOut #UToledoNSM #UToledoRocketScience #RitterPlanetarium #LunarEclipse #13ABC #RedMoon

Shout out to Dr. Todd Crail, Distinguished University Lecturer in the Department of Environmental Sciences at The University of Toledo, who was the Keynote Speaker at the 38th Annual Michigan Native Plant Conference held March 1-2, 2025, at the Kellogg Convention Center in East Lansing, Mich.? ? Dr. Crail presented, “Plants, People and Perseverance: Incorporating Native Plantings in Urban Environments - Greening Toledo Through Service”. Greening UToledo Through Service (GUTS) is a student-led project that works to increase native plantings on the Main Campus of the University of Toledo. Student employees convert turf to prairie, implement formal garden projects, and support these efforts through greenhouse cultivation of plant material. Much of the work is facilitated through service-learning opportunities where students experience real-life applications of what they have covered in class. In 2022-2024, GUTS facilitated 1000 student volunteer hours (600 for credit, 400 completely voluntary each year) to grow and plant ~20,000 native plant plugs.? ? Current and past undergraduate students also participated at the conference during the poster session: Caleb Thompson, a sophomore seeking a B.S. in Environmental Sciences; Emma Heslop, a senior seeking a B.A. in Environmental Studies; Emily Brach, a junior seeking a B.S. in Environmental Sciences; and Brock Hochanadel, a fall 2024 graduate who earned a B.A. in Environmental Studies and graduated Magna Cum Laude and with departmental honors. The UToledo Alumni Association ? Congrats Dr. Crail, Caleb, Emma, Emily and Brock on the great research taking place at UToledo! ? #ThePowerToDo #GUTS #UToledo #UToledoNSM
