In the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics (NSM) at The University of Toledo, we’re excited to launch a new mentorship program for our first-year students starting in fall 2025 - the UToledo NSM Mentor Collective program! ? In the UToledo NSM Mentor Collective program, NSM first-year students (mentees) are paired with a relevant upper-division peer mentor, someone invested in their success — a person ready to listen, inspire, help navigate challenges and recognize opportunities. Mentees will learn what to expect in their first year of college, how to approach challenges and receive general tailored advice. At the same time, mentors will have the opportunity to build their networks and develop skills to become better professionals and leaders ? As a mentor with the UToledo NSM Mentor Collective program, you’ll be paired with an incoming first-year student to help them be successful in their first year of college. You can share your experiences at UToledo NSM as you listen, inspire and help students navigate challenges and recognize opportunities while developing your own professional and leadership skills. ? Dr. Rupali Chandar, a professor and associate chair of the Department of Physics and Astronomy at The University of Toledo, and Grant Donnelly, a Ph.D. student (J.D. Smith, advisor) studying physics with a concentration in astronomy, will lead fourth-cycle observing programs on the James Webb Space Telescope. ? Grant Donnelly is the third UToledo Ph.D. student in four cycles to submit a successful proposal to use the telescope. During his three allocated hours, Donnelly will collect infrared spectral data that will complete a uniform set of observations on the spiral galaxy NGC 4151. ? Dr. Chandar studies the star formation cycle and how it impacts the host galaxies. With the success of her fourth-cycle proposal — her third successful proposal in four cycles on the James Webb Space Telescope — she’ll be turning the space telescope’s lens toward the Phantom Void in the Phantom Galaxy, also known as the spiral galaxy NGC 628. ? “This program will help us to better understand the role that bubbles or holes in the interstellar medium play in a great galactic conspiracy,†said Chandar, who was allocated 29 hours on the telescope. “This conspiracy results in an exquisitely fine-tuned balance between star formation and suppression that keeps the star formation efficiency in normal spiral galaxies like the Milky Way at just around 0.5 to 1% over billions of years.†? Saturday Morning Science at The University of Toledo! ? Our third public talk in this series is on Saturday, March 29, 2025, at 10 a.m. in Wolfe Hall Room 1205 on Main Campus! ? “Extreme Weather Events in a Changing Climate†will be presented by Ross Ellet, Meteorologist, 13ABC Action News, Toledo. ? Description: As the climate changes, it is inevitable that the weather patterns will also change, which is impacting the number of extreme weather events locally and the severity of them. However, as we dive into the data, you will see some trends that you expect and you will see some trends that are surprising. Could a hotter climate locally actually decrease the number of days with extreme heat (highs over 100 degrees)? While the common thinking is that a hotter climate will lead to more severe weather, the data shows that the tornado trends locally and across the country are evolving in complex and complicated ways. We will dive into the data to see how these extreme weather events are changing in a warming world. ? Free parking is available in Lot 13, right next to Wolfe Hall. The program is sponsored by the College of Natural Sciences and Mathematics Office of the Dean. ? ??All talks are FREE and open to the public! ? Saturday Morning Science is a great way to learn about cutting edge as well as everyday science topics. Enjoy a complimentary, light breakfast prior to the program and learn about recent discoveries and STEM careers. ? Huge congratulations to Dr. Tomer Avidor-Reiss, Department of Biological Sciences at The University of Toledo, along with undergraduate students in BIOL 4700-003 (Biological Literature and Communication), who authored the publication of a new paper in BioEssays titled, “The Known and Unknown about Female Reproductive Tract Mucus Rheological Properties.†? The class identified a knowledge gap in reproductive biology, reviewed the literature and postulated a novel hypothesis. We found little is known about mucus viscosity changes along the female reproductive tract. Based on their literature review, they hypothesized that reduction in mucus viscosity along the tract starts with the cervix, continues with the uterus, and ends at the oviduct. They suggested that this gradient in viscosity may direct the sperm to the egg (see Graphical Abstract). This enhances our understanding of fertilization, potentially pointing to new directions for fertility diagnostics and paving the way for new approaches to male infertility treatments. This is the first coauthored publication from this course, BIOL 4700-003! ? A collaborative team of researchers conducted the study at UToledo, which included 15 undergraduate students: Derek F. Kluczynski (B.S. Biology, Spring ‘24), Abigail Gladwell (B.S. Biology, Fall ’23), *Holly Heck (B.S. Biology, Fall ‘23), *Faith Zhang (B.S. Biology, Fall ‘23), Ethan Good (B.S. Biology, Fall ‘23), Alexis Waggoner (B.S. Biology, Spring ‘24), Mykala Reinhart (B.S. Biology, Fall ’23), *Megan Good (B.S. Biology, Fall ’23), Dawson Moore (B.S. Biology, Fall ’23), *Dennis Filatoff (B.S. Biology, Fall ’23), Supriya Dhar (B.S. Biology, Spring ’24), Elisa Nigro (B.S. Biology, Spring ’24), *Lucas Flanagan (B.S. Biology, Fall ’23), Sunny Yadav (B.S. Biology, Fall ’24) and Trinity Williams (B.A. Biology, Fall ’23); Ph.D. student, Luke Achinger (B.S. Biology, Spring ‘21); and four professors: Dr Aniruddha Ray, Physics and Astronomy; Dr. Tariq A. Shah, Urology; Dr. Matthew W. Liberatore, Chemical Engineering; and Dr. Tomer Avidor-Reiss, Biological Sciences. ? The full article can be read online: bit.ly/4j21khR ? *Upon graduation with their undergraduate degree in biology, students matriculated into The University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences Doctor of Medicine (MD) program. ? #UToledo #UToledoNSM #MaleInfertility #UToledoResearch #UToledoRocketScience #UndergraduateResearch #experientiallearning The UToledo Alumni Association
