I'm very excited that PBS has made Episode 1 (WATER) of Season 1 of "Power Trip: The Story of Energy" available for free on their official YouTube channel. Filmed on location in Israel, Singapore, France, England and the USA, this episode gives a global view of how we use energy for water and water for energy while featuring experts such as Ernest J. Moniz, Ashlynn Stillwell, Yael Glazer, Martin Doyle, Corey James, David Sedlak and Peter Gleick. This film was made by Alpheus Media directed by Mat Hames and produced by Beth Hames and Juan Garcia with support from Itron, Inc. The Rockefeller Foundation Alfred P. Friday was the 20th anniversary of the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin Academy of Distinguished Alumni (and the unveiling of a new wall to recognize this group). It is such an honor to be recognized alongside the other alumni and some of the professors I had when I was going to school there (who still look exactly the same – by the way. I think I would recommend everyone go to campus and drink the water in ETC!!). I really do love the foundational tool belt of problem-solving skills that this department taught me as an undergraduate student at this great and public institution. Thank you and hook ‘em!

Texas Engineers are keeping it cool ?? Data centers, which power the internet and AI, generate a lot of heat, and cooling them uses a lot of energy. So Texas Engineer, Guihua Yu, professor in the Cockrell School of Engineering’s Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin and Texas Materials Institute, The University of Texas at Austin, created a new material that helps keep these data centers, as well as other critical electronics like semiconductors, cool. This new material, made from liquid metal and aluminum nitride, could cut data center cooling energy use by 13%. We are excited to announce the awardees of the Creating Connections for National Security Research internal funding program to build partnerships between UT campus faculty and Applied Research Laboratories, The University of Texas at Austin researchers to develop critical technologies. In its third year, the program is focused on funding promising research of high relevance to national security while establishing strategic relationships between researchers on both campuses.?Previous awardees went on to continue work with ARL:UT and propose additional related research to the U.S. Air Force, DARPA, MITRE, IARPA and Sandia National Laboratories. #defense #research #innovation

Congratulations to researchers from the Walker Department of Mechanical Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin: Gizem Toplu Tutay, Erhan Kutanoglu, and John Hasenbein. With funding from the IC2 Institute, the research team has created a new model for grid resilience during a flooding event?– one that efficiently manages resources while also minimizing the well-being loss of socially vulnerable communities.
