Chelsea Jones is the recipient of the SOAR Advancing Innovation Award! This award recognizes the individual who fosters creativity and innovation in their role, is known for leadership activities, service, and other contributions to advancing the SON, and thinks "outside the box" when improving a process. Chelsea works diligently behind the scenes, committed to advancing the SON’s positive visibility through social media, event planning, and building professional relationships. Her expertise in organizing the Holiday Style Fashion Show and Luncheon fundraiser, from coordinating with chairs to managing committees, is truly impressive. She is an incredible asset to our team! The UTMB School of Nursing was honored to host the White Coat Ceremony for the Fall 2024 BSN Traditional cohort on Monday. In an auditorium filled with family, friends, UTMB leadership, faculty, staff, and alumni, we celebrated as over 130 students marked the beginning of their nursing school journey. Amy Bradley, SON alumna (class of ’88), gave the keynote address. “Healing others is our calling. And healing lies as much in our caring as in our brilliant skills,” said Bradley. “In our connection to the patient and their family. In our empathy. It is not only our duty as nurses, but if we let it, it will be the greatest honor and reward of our nursing careers.” Welcome and congratulations, students!

Dr. Darpan Patel, SON Vice Dean for Research and Scholarship, has shared invaluable insights on prostate health and the services provided by UTMB Health in a recent UTMB blog post. Sherry Boyd is the recipient of the SOAR Education Award! This award recognizes the individual who sets a positive tone for their academic area, helps advance our education priority and takes actions to improve processes, presents a service-oriented attitude when working with students and faculty and takes professional responsibility for advancing a culture of educational excellence. Sherry, who serves as Course Builder in our Multimedia Lab, was described as someone who is always here to help, no matter the situation. She takes great pride in her work and in supporting others, and her dedication to both faculty and students ensures the best outcomes for everyone involved. Congratulations, Sherry!

This week, the UTMB School of Nursing proudly welcomed over 350 new students across our BSN, RN-BSN, MSN, DNP, PhD and certificate programs at orientation. Students were inspired by university leaders and met the dedicated faculty and staff who will support them throughout their journey. We also hosted a Fun in the SON (initiative established in 2023 dedicated to nurturing our SON culture) Sno Cone Cool Down event. Faculty, staff and new students from across campus enjoyed a refreshing treat while engaging with others who joined in on the fun. Here’s to new beginnings and a future full of success. The UTMB School of Nursing has been designated as an Apple Distinguished School for a second time! This redesignation is partly due to the nursing school's iLead (Innovative Learning Environment Accelerating Discovery) program, which emphasizes innovation in learning, teaching, and leadership through the use of technology in the classroom. Lisa, who serves as a Research Nurse II in the RISE Center, exemplifies excellence in her role. Her nominations describe her not only as a master of her craft but also describes how she brings infectious enthusiasm to her work.
