As Vietnam’s traditional craft villages face decline, Interior Architecture's Assistant Professor Hojung Kim began collaborating with artisans, architects, economic advisors, urban planners, developers and governments to document, sustain, and innovate within the realm of traditional craftsmanship, addressing both the socio-economic challenges artisans face and the broader environmental impacts of material production. In a new exhibition at the college's S. Gay Street gallery window, Kim has merged traditional rattan weaving with digital prototyping to preserve heritage through innovation. Working with artisans in Phu Nghia commune, the research led to a modular lighting installation, blending 3D-printed joinery, bamboo structures, and computational design into a stunning 60-inch woven sphere.

This week the School of Architecture, with support from the college, hosted the Possible Worlds Symposium. Our panelist took us on a journey through the future of society, nature, and design. Through discussions including Social Imaginaries, Environmental Imaginaries, and Material Imaginaries, we unpacked how our world is built and how it is shaped by politics, environment, and resources. Big thanks to Anthony Dunne for his keynote that had us all rethinking the very fabric of design and its speculative potential. The symposium was led by Assistant Professors Micah Rutenberg and Mark Stanley, with support from steering committee Associate Professor Catty Dan Zhang and Assistant Professors Frances Hsu and Jeremy Magner.
