The numbers are in... ?? After Hurricane Helene passed through Appalachia, 7,360 storm response workers were dedicated to restoring power to 282,000 of our customers in just over a week. Together, they repaired 214 miles of power lines -- that's about the distance from Charleston, WV to Kingsport, TN. ????

For the last few years, I've had the pleasure of working with the team at the Utility Arborist Association on the T&D World Vegetation Management Supplement. Every September, I've also traveled across the country to attend the annual Trees & Utilities conference, which is presented by the UAA and the Arbor Day Foundation. This year, I flew down to Fort Worth, Texas, for the event, and I was able to have a conversation with Dennis Fallon, the executive director of the UAA, for the Line Life Podcast. To listen to the full episode, which is sponsored by Huskie Tools, go to linelife.podbean.com. Also, lineworkers, I need your help with an upcoming podcast episode on Hurricane Helene and Milton. If your line crew is responding to either one of these hurricanes, please send me a voice memo about your role in the response to [email protected]. Those who send in a voice memo will receive a free Huskie Heroes T-shirt and be entered to win a Storm Jaw to help expedite the restoration. Learn more at https://lnkd.in/dFgEyVkc. I look forward to hearing from you. Thanks for listening! Since their deployment on September 24th, our dedicated team of approximately 175 employees has been working 16-hour days, seven days a week, across North and South Carolina to assist with the Hurricane Helene power restoration effort. Their hard work, dedication, professionalism, and commitment to safety continue to have a direct impact on the recovery efforts of the communities they are serving. As they wind down their current efforts, they are already preparing to respond to the incoming Hurricane Milton. Starting today, many of these employees will begin traveling from the Carolinas to Florida to assist with the upcoming power restoration efforts. Please keep them and their families in your thoughts as they selflessly respond to help fellow Americans in their time of need.

Authentic encouragement for leaders. Dad. Grandpa. Head Coach & CEO at SEMO Electric Cooperative & GoSEMO Fiber. Keynote Speaker. Founder of The Friday Feature - watch each Friday.

Tomorrow, we will be rotating linemen who are assisting with power restoration efforts after Hurricane Helene. Although they’ve relocated to support another cooperative, our team remains headquartered at Tent City. ?? I am incredibly proud of Team SEMO (the employees at SEMO Electric Cooperative & GoSEMO Fiber) for their efforts in restoring power in the southeast after Hurricane Helene, as well as those staying home to take care of southeast Missouri. ?? With the additional damage from Hurricane Milton, the impact will be a long journey for many. Let’s keep everyone in our prayers, especially for their safety.

We are thinking of the people in the Southeast – including Wright Tree Service crew members who live and work in the region and those who have been dispatched from across the U.S. to provide additional support to impacted communities. As we prepare for Hurricane Milton, we encourage folks to follow local news outlets or U.S. National Weather Service (NWS) for the latest updates. Stay safe!

A terrific turnout in Eugene, Oregon, this week as Executive Director Dennis Fallon welcomed attendees to the Western Regional Meeting. From classroom education with speakers like Simon Gutierrez from Pacific Power on Vegetation Management for Wildfire Mitigation to field day with outdoor experiences including drones and herbicides, helicopter work and training, and an equipment showcase. Thank you to our sponsors: Eocene Environmental Group, Wright Tree Service, Asplundh Tree Expert, LLC, ArborMetrics Solutions, LLC, TREES, Corteva Agriscience, Davey Resource Group, Inc., and Heli-Dunn. #regionalmeeting #utilities #education #training

Join Paul Hurysz Jr. MBA, CSP, for our upcoming webinar, "Identifying High Energy Hazards with the STKY Wheel" on October 31, 2024, at noon CDT. Register here, https://lnkd.in/djUGjTNk

Good Day and Happy Rocktober everyone! I have been engaging in insightful discussions with Arborists recently around the country about the importance of identifying high-energy hazards using the STCKY ( a.k.a. The Energy Wheel) Wheel. I find it fulfilling to share knowledge with others that can positively impact individuals and organizations through improved hazard identification. We all should be aware that prioritizing and mitigating hazards begins with their identification. Unfortunately, we have learned through the Construction Safety Research Alliance (CSRA) led by Dr. Matt Hallowell that we are significantly less than perfect when it comes to identifying hazards, or stuff that can kill us on the job.? Recently, I’ve come to the realization that we need to put more emphasis on discussing "controls" along with hazard identification conversations. For me, "Safety" is not the absence of events but the presence of effective controls. With that said, not all controls are equal, as highlighted by the Hierarchy of Controls chart created by NIOSH. We should be emphasizing that Hazard Controls (such as the elimination of a hazard) are far more effective than Exposure Controls, like PPE, when it comes to protecting workers. It's crucial to understand that while PPE, Administrative and Warning signs/controls are vital, they only control our exposure to a risk, but do not mitigate the hazards. Hazard Controls, like Engineering and Elimination controls, are key in effectively reducing risks associated with the hazards when there are direct controls in place. To take a deeper dive into Hazard ID and Controls, please feel free join me in the upcoming UAA Webinar on "Identifying High Energy Hazards with the STKY Wheel" on October 31st. Register for the event on www.gotouaa.org by selecting “main menu” in the top right corner of the page, then selecting “webinars” under events to sign up for the event that may be full of some valuable insights. Together, let's prioritize Hazard Controls to move the needle (in a positive direction) on SIF’s in our industries. Feel free to reach out to me or the UAA Safety Committee for more information via our profiles. Take Care! #UAA #SAFETY #HOP #UVM #ASSP #SGA #EEI #HALLOWELL #CSRA

?? After Hurricane Helene, the Appalachian Mountains called for help, and lineworkers from across the country answered. We send our heartfelt thanks to them, as well as everyone who has been dedicated to rebuilding the communities we call home. ??? Workers from 27 states helped our crews and contractors restore electric service. Mutual assistance crews traveled from Alabama; Arkansas; Connecticut; Delaware; Florida; Georgia; Illinois; Indiana; Iowa; Kansas; Kentucky; Louisiana; Maine; Maryland; Massachusetts; Michigan; Missouri; Nebraska; New Hampshire; New York; Ohio; Oklahoma; Pennsylvania; Rhode Island; Texas; Vermont; and Wisconsin. ?? Over 320 assessors worked on foot, by drone and by helicopter to assess storm damage. Workers faced historic flooding, fallen trees and debris, and road and bridge closures. ?? More than 1,400 forestry personnel worked to remove trees, limbs and debris hazards from each of the 3,100 unique locations across Northeast Tennessee, Southern Virginia and Southern West Virginia needing repairs following the storm. ?? With their support, we rebuilt the energy grid and restored power using special equipment for hard-to-access areas, including helicopters, digger derricks and track machines. Some areas required 2-person crews to hand-dig 8-foot-deep holes to place new poles, which, depending on the location, could take between 2-4 hours to complete. ?? In total, crews replaced more than 1,455 poles, 214 miles of wire and 438 transformers, among hundreds of other critical pieces of electrical infrastructure.
