Today, the UTEP College of Health Sciences celebrated a gift of over $130,000 from the LaMantia family through the Stars Scholarship Fund to support increasing the number of qualified, highly-educated Licensed Clinical Social Workers (LCSWs) in our community. This gift marks the beginning of UTEP’s participation in a partnership aimed at addressing critical shortages in mental and behavioral health providers in the Paso del Norte Region. In El Paso, the ratio of providers to individuals needing care is 1 to 810, approximately 2 ? times higher than the national average. Unfortunately, the financial burden of completing the required 100 unpaid supervised hours in pursuit of the LCSW leaves many UTEP Master of Social Work graduates hesitant to pursue the certification. This coming January, funding from the gift will support a cohort of 36 UTEP Master of Social Work graduates pursuing the credential. Dr. Jason Mallonee and Dr. Viridiana Ortiz from the Department of Social Work will provide oversight for the graduates as they move through the LCSW certification process. Representatives from multiple community agencies who partner with UTEP and the Department of Social Work were present at the gift recognition, including Emergence Health Network, the El Paso Chamber of Commerce, the Paso del Norte Health Foundation, El Paso Child Guidance Center, and the Paso del Norte branch of the Meadows Mental Health Policy Institute, among others.
