Our senior engineering and computer science students in The Jonsson School each participate in a capstone program called UTDesign?. Projects created by students for real companies through this program have won 7 national first place awards in the last 4 years. The UTDesign Studio provides students with over 40,000 square feet of ideation, fabrication, assembly, test and meeting space. The studio serves students from UTDesign Capstone, EPICS, Makerspace and Startup. Several companies also locate their on-campus internship programs at the studio. Our students prove year-after-year that they are innovative, creative, and more than capable to solve real-world Engineering and Computer Science problems.

This past semester, I was so happy to have the opportunity to compete in the first in-person UTDesign competition ?? since COVID. While I will get to the big news in a minute, I first want to talk about the amazing connections and learning opportunities that this program gave us. At the beginning of the semester, our team saw Spark Biomedical Inc on the list of companies and put them as our first choice. The project was to facilitate remote monitoring of neuro-stimulation devices - something that we believed could be incredibly impactful, contribute to the long-term treatment of various conditions, would be a great chance to grow as engineers, and would be tons of fun. Little did I know, this would lead to one of my proudest achievements of my college career. We ended up winning 1st place for the Fall 2024 Engineering and Computer Science UTDesign, our school’s Capstone program. ?? On top of that, I believe that the platform we created will truly go on to become a life-changing tool that could affect a lot of people. Of course, none of this would have been possible with so many people working together to make it happen. First, is Spark Biomedical Inc - not only did they provide us the opportunity to work on the project, having the chance to connect with the team throughout the semester provided us invaluable insight into the users of the tool, and gave us a chance to gain valuable insight into the users' perspective, as well as greater understanding of some of the unique (and often complex) obstacles that we faced. Next, is the team behind the UTDesign program itself. Having the chance to work with a real, cutting-edge, and innovative company is not an opportunity that college students often encounter. Last, but not least, is my team - Avani Garde Matthew Sheldon, and Shashank Vinay Kumar - who worked alongside me to truly bring everything to reality.
