To honor The Cockrell Foundation’s extraordinary legacy, the UT Tower will be lit burnt orange and display a 100 on one side on Tuesday, March 25, serving as a beacon of gratitude for a family whose unwavering commitment has shaped the lives of thousands. Over the last 50 years, The Cockrell Foundation’s giving has surpassed $100 million, valued at $250 million, which leaves an indelible mark on UT Austin. More than 4,000 students have been awarded scholarships and fellowships, empowering them to pursue their dreams. The foundation has also established over50 faculty chairs and 64 permanent endowments spanning six colleges, schools and units, ensuring that the impact of their generosity extends far beyond a single generation. Long before philanthropy in higher education became widespread, the Cockrell family recognized the importance of giving back. They were pioneers, setting a standard of generosity that continues to inspire. We are honored to present the Inaugural J. Tinsley Oden Lecture on Tuesday, April 15, 3:30pm, at the Oden Institute, with guest lecturer Prof. Dr. Barbara Wohlmuth. Wohlmuth is the head of the Chair for Numerical Mathematics at?the Technical University of Munich (TUM). The lecture will be held in the Peter O'Donnell Building in Avaya Auditorium, with a reception following. All are welcome! The lecture honors the contributions of Dr. J. Tinsley Oden, and will be an annual event that brings together the Oden Institute community in an interdisciplinary forum of the kind that was close to Tinsley's heart. I am happy to announce what has been in the works for quite some time: LumiPath, Inc. (lumipath.io) ? My team, Dr. James Tunnell, Dr. Sapun Parekh, and I, are developing a novel approach to biopsy acquisition for cervical cancer diagnosis. With over 93% of cases deemed completely preventable by the CDC, our mission is to ensure that every patient gets the early intervention they deserve. With our pain-free microbiopsy technology, every colposcopy becomes a gold-standard diagnosis (after a positive initial screening) producing a 35% increase in sensitivity to detection. ? Join us in ending cervical cancer. ? We are currently raising a seed round to complete the minimally viable product for clinical data collection moving towards FDA approval. ? The view from the top is pretty sweet?? Last week, Texas Engineering students, leadership, alumni, donors and the more than 300 construction workers who are building the new Engineering Discovery Building gathered to celebrate the "topping out" of the structure. This gathering celebrated the halfway point of the building’s construction. ? "The Engineering Discovery Building will be the new home of the Hildebrand Department of Petroleum and Geosystems Engineering and the McKetta Department of Chemical Engineering, The University of Texas at Austin," said Roger T. Bonnecaze, dean of the Cockrell School of Engineering. "This building will bring students, faculty and staff together to learn, to discover and to create.?In just the first 10 years, thousands of chemical and petroleum engineering students will be educated, hundreds of patents filed and licensed, and dozens of start-ups will be created." ?
