Join us at 4 p.m. tomorrow (Feb. 11) in SEIR 298 for our Distinguished Women in Science Speaker Series featuring Dr. Asmeret Asefaw Berhe, professor of soil biogeochemistry and Falasco Chair in Earth Sciences and Geology at the University of California, Merced. Dr. Berhe was director of the U.S. Department of Energy Office of Science from May 2022 to March 2024 and was the first person of color to direct the office, which is the single largest funder of the physical sciences in the U.S. Her talk, "From Roots to Reach: One Scientist's Quest to Understand Soils, Confront Climate Change, and Open Doors in STEM", is open to the public and is geared toward a general audience. A reception will precede the talk at 3:30 p.m. in SEIR 298. #MaverickScience #WomeninSTEM

J. Ping Liu, UTA professor of physics, is leading a project to develop a more efficient process for sourcing rare earth elements needed to produce high-performance magnets. Liu received a $1.3 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy for the study, which aims to make the mining of these critical materials more cost-efficient and environmentally sustainable by using cheaper, more abundant materials. UTA's Amphibian and Reptile Diversity Research Center (ARDRC) has become one of the largest publicly accessible herpetology libraries in the world, thanks to in-kind donations of tens of thousands of rare books, scientific journals, and articles, and reports over the past two years. In recognition of a generous donation from the Joseph Rex Dinardo Jr. Herpetology and Natural History Science Research Trust in Philadelphia, the ARDRC has named the library for Joseph Dinardo, Jr, an amateur herpetologist and nature enthusiast who amassed an enormous collection of literature and reptiles during his lifetime, and which now constitutes the bulk of the ARDRC library. A new study led by Todd Castoe, UTA professor of biology, provides scientists with a better genetic understanding of bedbugs. The research offers an updated genome analysis of the common bedbug Cimex lectularius, providing new insight for those working to prevent bedbug infestation, develop remediation strategies and track pesticide resistance. Today we celebrate our newest graduates at the COS Fall 2024 Commencement ceremony (2 p.m., Globe Life Field). One of our amazing grads is Ramesh Sharma, who is receiving a Ph.D. in mathematics, at the age of 85. Sharma had a long and successful career as an engineer and after retiring, he enrolled at UTA and earned a master's in mechanical engineering. He then began doctoral studies in mathematics, and will walk across the stage today. Dr. Sharma is a wonderful example of one the College of Science's core principles - that everyone should strive to be a lifelong learner. Congratulations, Dr. Sharma and all members of the Class of 2024! Read more about Dr. Sharma here: https://lnkd.in/dY3hsADx #MaverickScience #MavGrad2024
