Pedro Maia, UTA assistant professor of mathematics, is part of a research team which used a new brain-mapping technique to identify memory-related brain cells vulnerable to protein buildup, a key factor in the development of Alzheimer’s disease. In Texas, nearly half a million people live with Alzheimer’s, a form of dementia that costs the state approximately $24 billion in caregiver time, according to the Texas Department of State Health Services. Texas ranks fourth in the nation for Alzheimer’s cases and second in Alzheimer’s-related deaths. Shane DuBay, UTA assistant professor of biology, is co-author of a new study that found high concentrations of microplastics in the lungs of birds of various species. Researchers worldwide are increasingly alarmed by how pervasive these harmful particles are in the air humans breathe and the food they eat. Dubay said birds were chosen for the study because they are found in almost every corner of the world and often share environments with humans. UTA's Amphibian and Reptile Diversity Research Center (ARDRC) has become one of the largest publicly accessible herpetology libraries in the world, thanks to in-kind donations of tens of thousands of rare books, scientific journals, and articles, and reports over the past two years. In recognition of a generous donation from the Joseph Rex Dinardo Jr. Herpetology and Natural History Science Research Trust in Philadelphia, the ARDRC has named the library for Joseph Dinardo, Jr, an amateur herpetologist and nature enthusiast who amassed an enormous collection of literature and reptiles during his lifetime, and which now constitutes the bulk of the ARDRC library.
