  • ?? Harnessing Systematic Trading Strategies at MSIF ?? At David Eccles Business School, the Masters Student Investment Fund (MSIF) isn’t just about theory! This semester, our student portfolio managers have been leveraging?systematic and?quantitative strategies?to enhance portfolio returns while managing risk. Here’s a look at some of the systematic trading strategies shaping our investment decisions: ? GarpMo – Based on the principles of Growth at a Reasonable Price (GARP), GarpMo seeks to blend a momentum style approach to target undervalued growth stocks with upside potential and high risk-adjusted returns, solid sharpe ratios, and a favorable PEG ratios. ? Small Cap Syndrome?– Targeting?profitable small and mid-cap stocks, this strategy capitalizes on overlooked growth opportunities, using the?Relative Strength Index (RSI)?to filter for sustained uptrends. ? Golden Cross – A?momentum-driven?approach that signals buy opportunities when the?50-day moving average crosses above the 200-day moving average, historically a sign of upward price movement. ? High Energy & Low Beta – Targets the fund's current exposure gap by investing in the Energy sector that are expected to exhibit less volatility and outperform the industry average. ? Staples & Stethoscopes Mid-Cap?– Targets the fund's current exposure gap by investing in underserved Healthcare, Utilities, Materials, and Consumer Staples sectors with Cash Flow Yields above 10% and a positive net income. Each of these strategies undergoes?rigorous backtesting?to evaluate?risk-adjusted returns, Sharpe ratios, and sector correlations, ensuring our investment decisions are data-driven and strategically sound. ?? If you’re a student interested in?investments, fundamental & systematic investing, or portfolio management, MSIF provides an invaluable hands-on experience. • This past Monday, the Master Student Investment Fund (MSIF) had the pleasure of hosting Ryan Gardner, CFA, who shared invaluable insights from his career journey in investment management and beyond. From his early days navigating finance without much guidance to building an impressive resume that includes Goldman Sachs, Ensign Peak Advisors, and Olympus Wealth Management, Ryan’s story is one of adaptability, continuous learning, and the power of networking. Here are Key Takeaways from Ryan’s Journey: ??Embrace Every Opportunity – At Lunt Capital Management, Ryan wore multiple hats, launched an ETF, and raised $100M—proving that early roles can provide immense learning experiences. ??Attention to Detail is Non-Negotiable – His time at Goldman Sachs reinforced the importance of precision, especially in high-stakes environments like investment banking. ??Find the Right Fit – Throughout his career, he discovered that a more dynamic workplace is where he thrives. However, this type of discovery comes with time and patience, so students should enjoy the process. Perhaps the most impactful message Ryan left us with was this: Be proactive in building and maintaining professional relationships—don’t burn bridges. His career moves have consistently been shaped by meaningful connections, proving that networking isn’t just about finding the next job; it’s about being part of a community. A huge thank you to Ryan for sharing his experiences with us. #Finance #Networking #CareerGrowth #InvestmentManagement
