We honored 13 rural healthcare workers for National Rural Health Day. The healthcare workers received “Impact Awards” for their efforts to make sure all Utahns have access to quality healthcare services. We are pleased to announce that Dr. Stacey Bank has joined the Utah Department of Health and Human Services as our new Executive Medical Director. Dr. Bank has a distinguished career in healthcare, and we are confident that she will be a valuable asset to our team. On her first day, Dr. Bank met with the Executive Director and visited the Office of the Medical Examiner and our Correctional Health Services staff, who provide medical care to the incarcerated population at Utah’s two prisons. She had the opportunity to meet with staff and learn more about the department's work. Please join us in welcoming Dr. Bank to the team! #Healthcare #Leadership #Utah #NewHire #MedicalDirector

Dr. Gopi Penmetsa is a rheumatologist with University of Utah Health Hospitals and Clinics. One of his patients was on the brink of losing his job due to arthritis. Since seeing Dr. Penmetsa, his condition has improved and he's been able to return to his normal life and work. Dr. Penmetsa came to Utah on a J-1 Visa. He chose to stay after seeing there weren’t enough specialists like him to care for patients. The Conrad 30/J-1 Visa Waiver Program allows doctors who have completed their graduate medical education under a J-1 Visa to stay and practice in the United States. Utah’s educational loan repayment programs help support physicians like Dr. Tim Duncan at Vernal’s Uintah Basin Medical Center / Uintah Basin Healthcare. Dr. Duncan recently diagnosed and treated a patient with HIV and syphilis. “Diagnosing this patient helped protect him from potentially very poor outcomes from two untreated illnesses, as well as protect our small, rural community from the spread of these diseases,” Dr. Duncan said. So grateful for partners committed to the work!
When you practice kindness you are able to better practice leadership. Thanks to our partnership with One Kind Act a Day, the Utah Division of Juvenile Justice and Youth Services, and several other service minded organizations, this is what our recent cohort of system involved youth were able to learn this summer. The youth summarize the lessons that one kind act a day can make an impact with a mural. Their mentors Tracy Williams and Rob Pacheco were joined by community partners to celebrate the healing and growth that occurred at Farmington Bay youth detention center. Thank you to the SEMNANI FAMILY FOUNDATION for personally recognizing youth and staff for their incredible efforts and to our partners, Ogden Contemporary Arts, the Utah Division of Arts and Museums, and University Neighborhood Partners for continuing to support programming that leads to empowered healing. Desiree, a Utah mom of 3, nearly lost her life due to severe hemorrhaging after giving birth to her 3rd child. About 45% of new moms experience birth or postpartum trauma like Desiree, according to the National Institutes of Health. At the Utah Department of Health and Human Services, we work with healthcare providers and community organizations to bring awareness to birth and postpartum trauma and mental health challenges many women and families face. Much of this work is done through the Utah Women and Newborns Quality Collaborative (UWNQC). The UWNQC is a statewide network of professionals, hospitals, and clinics dedicated to improving the health outcomes for Utah women and babies by using evidence-based practice guidelines and quality improvement processes.
