Exciting news for Utah! Thanks to Rep. Earl L. "Buddy" Carter (R-GA) and the Community Oncology Alliance, a crucial meeting took place with Federal Trade Commissioner Melissa Holyoak at Utah Cancer Specialists. Holyoak tackled the pressing issue of Pharmacy Benefit Managers (PBMs) and their impact on prescription drug costs for cancer patients. Despite their role in managing drug benefits and negotiating prices, there is growing concern that PBMs may be inflating costs rather than reducing them. During the roundtable discussion, Holyoak emphasized the importance of a thorough investigation and detailed analysis of PBM practices. She underscored the need for more comprehensive data to accurately assess whether PBMs are contributing to the rising costs in healthcare. Kyle Kitchen, Director of Clinical Services at Utah Cancer Specialists, highlighted the challenge: “Over 35% of cancer treatments involve oral medications. Our pharmacy team provides personalized support, but the overwhelming cost of these drugs can be a huge burden for patients." Dog Therapy Appreciation Day is celebrated on April 11 every year to appreciate the dogs who comfort us by being therapy dogs. Therapy dogs go through a rigorous testing program before they become certified. With this certification, they become eligible to visit hospitals and nursing homes to give comfort to people. Being around dogs makes everyone happy, and on this day we thank dogs for making us happier. Therapy dogs have been found to reduce stress & anxiety, provide comfort & emotional support along with encouraging socialization for patients feeling isolated. We were so happy to have Teddy and Intermountain Therapy Animals come into Utah Cancer Specialists every week to brightening the day of our many amazing cancer warriors. #dogtherapyday #pettherapy #utahcancerspecialists #cancersuck
