The Good Samaritan Remediation of Abandoned Hardrock Mines Act of 2024 is up for passage in the U.S. House tomorrow. This bipartisan, bicameral bill will accelerate efforts to clean up abandoned mine lands which predate modern environmental laws and mining industry best practices. The bill is years in the making and needs to get across the finish line. Please encourage your member of Congress to support final passage. ALL members of Utah’s congressional delegation are sponsors or co-sponsors of this bill, which shows that Utah is leading the way on common sense legislation that supports the public, taxpayers, and industry.

Congratulations to Rio Tinto on this historic announcement. The Kennecott Utah operation exemplifies how critical metal and minerals productions can coincide with sustainability and environmental stewardship.
Renewable diesel is now powering haul trucks and heavy machinery across our Kennecott operations in Utah in the US. This cuts Kennecott's Scope 1 emissions by approximately 450,000 tonnes—equivalent to taking 107,000 cars off the road annually. With fuel supplied by HF Sinclair, the shift includes our entire fleet of 97 haul trucks and heavy machinery plus the concentrator, smelter, refinery and tailings operations. It also reduces particulate matter emissions from our haul trucks by 40%, contributing to better air quality on site. Along with a range of decarbonisation initiatives, this transition to renewable diesel has helped cut Kennecott’s carbon footprint by 80% since 2018.
