The Gault Center, the national policy organization focused on defending youth, just published an assessment on Utah's Youth Defense system. It recognizes the progress Utah has made in recent years to improve the quality of youth representation, thanks in large part to IDC's work. It also lays out recommendations going forward. The IDC thanks the Gault Center, and everyone who participated in the report, for their thoughtful analysis of the state's system. These three incredible attorneys just presented at the American Bar Association's National Conference on Parent Representation in Washington D.C. Their topic, "Challenging the Dominant Paradigm: Advocating for Systemic Change Through Trial and Appeal," inspired practitioners from across the country. Since the Indigent Appellate Defense Division started handling Child Welfare appeals, the number of appellate decisions in the parent's favor has increased from 3% to over 30%! Fantastic work!
