Utah Community Action’s mission is to empower individuals, strengthen families, and build communities through self-reliance and education programs. Utah Community Action sets itself apart by offering a continuum of care that starts with solving immediate challenges and continues with programs that provide ongoing support and empowerment. Through holistic case management, we address the many factors that contribute to single generational, two-generational, and intergenerational poverty. Our six core programs are Adult Education, Head Start and Early Head Start, Case Management and Housing, HEAT assistance, Weatherization, and Nutrition. Founded in 1965, our organization has expanded our service area and services over the years to best serve our clients. In 2018, we served over 50,000 individuals living in poverty in Utah.

    Today, a box arrived with the author copies of my book, Lenses of Humanity. It is surreal to be holding this book after 5+ years of writing. My kids were so excited to look through the book and see their names in it. I will share the link soon to place an order on Amazon. Publishing a book is something I NEVER thought I would do. I was always the artist and for much of my schooling I did not excel at writing. Thanks to so many mentors who found creative ways to have me tell my story, I felt empowered to share my voice. Throughout the writing process, I felt like an imposter. There were times during the past five years when I felt that the book wasn't academic enough, wasn't profound enough, and wasn't practical enough. Once I stopped writing it for everyone else, and focused on what I wanted to convey to my students, my children, and my community, the words flowed and it felt authentic and liberating. I truly hope that you will pick up the book (or listen to the Audible) as I think the timing of its release is no coincidence. At a time of palpable vitriol and divisiveness, I believe there are valuable messages and actions to help us all heal and reframe how we can show up better for one another.
