For more than 140 years The University of Texas System has improved the lives of Texans and people all over the world through education, research and health care. With 14 institutions enrolling more than 256,000 students collectively, the UT System stands as one of the largest public university systems in the United States. UT institutions produce more than 66,000 graduates annually and award more than one-third of undergraduate degrees in Texas, as well as about 63% of the state’s medical degrees. Collectively, UT-owned and affiliated hospitals and clinics accounted for more than 10.6 million outpatient visits and more than 2 million hospital days last year. UT institutions are among the most innovative in the world, ranking No. 1 in Texas and No. 2 in the nation for federal research expenditures. The UT System also is one of the largest employers in Texas – employing more than 130,000 faculty, health care professionals, support staff and student workers.

With Texas’ over-65 population projected to grow significantly in coming decades, state leaders Rep. Greg Bonnen, MD, Sen. Joan Huffman and Rep. Tom Craddick joined the UT Systemwide Brain Summit to discuss how the state can become a national leader in dementia research and treatment, as well as the creation of a state-funded institute focused on dementia – one that could leverage the expertise of UT institutions in both research and care. "We feel that by...laser focusing on dementia, putting a big investment into it, and making it a goal and a priority of the Legislature and of Texans that we can make a real, real difference in the world," Sen Huffman said. The discussion was moderated by UT System Executive Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs John Zerwas M.D.
John Zerwas M.D., Executive Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs at the UT System, has been named the 2024 Distinguished Service Award winner by the American Society of Anesthesiologists? (ASA). A physician for more than 30 years, Dr. Zerwas is a past ASA President and a certified ASA Fellow. His exceptional contributions to medicine are complemented by his leadership in public service, health policy and workforce development. As head of the UT System’s health enterprise—the nation’s eighth largest—Dr. Zerwas continues to shape the future of healthcare and Texas. Congrats, Dr. Z!
