The Department of Defense activated U.S. Special Operations Command (USSOCOM) April 16, 1987, at MacDill Air Force Base, Florida. The DoD created the new unified command in response to congressional action in the Goldwater-Nichols Defense Reorganization Act of 1986 and the Nunn-Cohen Amendment to the National Defense Authorization Act of 1987. Congress mandated a new four-star command be activated to prepare Special Operations Forces (SOF) to carry out assigned missions and, if directed by the president or secretary of defense, to plan for and conduct special operations.

USSOCOM Commander Gen. Bryan Fenton held a fireside chat with Medal of Honor recipient U.S. Army Col. (retired) Jack Jacobs in New York to discuss the evolution and role of special operations forces in the National Defense Strategy, the importance of America’s strategic federal and industrial collaboration for critical technology innovation, and SOF’s competitive advantage with global allies and partners to offer leaders joint force solutions. U.S. Special Operations Command develops, and employs, the world’s finest SOF to conduct special operations and activities as part of the joint force to support persistent, networked, and distributed combatant command operations and campaigns against state and non-state actors, all to protect and advance U.S. policies and objectives. Happening now ?? #DragonSpear 2024 ?? More than 800 participants from industry, academia, military, and government laboratories are taking part in USSOCOM’s Chemical, Biological, Radiological, and Nuclear #CBRN Defense Research and Development Acquisition Experiment Dragon Spear in Perry, Georgia, with over 150 registered technology partners. Special operations forces demonstrated how they detect, identify, and mitigate Countering Weapons of Mass Destruction threats to evacuate casualties in an operational scenario, and displayed how they are prepared to fight through CBRN threat environments to protect SOF forces. Dragon Spear enables modular joint SOF, conventional, multinational, and interagency partners to provide warfighters and combatant commanders with tailorable options to protect, fight and win in CBRN-contested environments through experimentation. On November 12, Dan Stigall, Director for Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Policy, met with midshipmen at the United States Naval Academy to discuss the strategic importance of CHMR as well as the ongoing implementation of the Civilian Harm Mitigation and Response Action Plan (CHMR-AP). Stigall provided insight on the new positions, institutions, and policies that midshipmen will see as they embark on their careers as officers in the US Navy or United States Marine Corps. He also discussed how limiting civilian harm caused by military operations helps to win our nation's conflicts. Photo credit: Kenneth Aniston Jr., USNA.

No comm, no bomb! Although many of their day-to-day achievements may go unrecognized, the effect they have can make the difference in mission success. They are SOF Enablers. Check out some of our SOF Enablers in this video of our SOJ6 and 112th Signal Detachment, who advance the combat readiness of our combined SOF presence on the Korean Peninsula. SOF Enablers are support personnel within a special operations unit who provide critical capabilities like logistics, intelligence analysis, medical support, communications, or technical expertise. They enable the SOF team to succeed by caring for necessary logistical and other support functions, allowing the special operators to focus on their core mission objectives in a complex and often hostile environment. Thanks to AFN Humphreys for giving us a wonderful chance to introduce one of our great SOF Enablers, SOCKOR J6 and 112th Signal Detachment, to the people in the world.
