A big thank you to Eugene Philhower and Przemyslaw (Pshemek) TRONINA, PhD for organizing customer visits to the incredible farms of Stateler, Stickle, and Burrier Linganore, from Detroit to Maryland. As well as impactful visits to the spectacular Airable Research Lab and The Ohio State University's Controlled Environment Food Production and Research Complex in Columbus, Ohio. There was no better way to close this busy summer! AQUA 2024 ?August 26-30, Denmark was the largest aquaculture conference ever held in Europe, with 3,600 delegates from 80 countries, according to the organizers. Very well done! Ana Viskovi? and Mario Stael, cheer on?your and your colleagues' achievements! The participation of the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC), Hellenic Centre for Marine Research, and Hellenic Pasteur Institute teams was a great success, and I would like to summarize the experience: ?? USSEC’s booth at the tradeshow and its role as a silver sponsor were highly rewarding. The tradeshow setting provided the perfect opportunity to engage with a diverse audience and raise awareness of U.S. Soy, especially by interacting with companies interested in sustainable ingredients and fish meal alternatives. ?? I returned home with a stack of over 100 business cards from new contacts—industry experts, researchers, and leaders in aquaculture—demonstrating that our presence fostered key conversations about innovations, research, and the future of sustainable aquaculture. These events are crucial platforms for building collaborations and supporting the industry’s sustainable growth. ?? AQUA 2024 also allowed us to inform the industry about USSEC’s efforts and achievements in developing the market for Mediterranean commercial fish over the past few years. Since resuming relations with the Greek aquaculture industry in 2017, USSEC has made visible progress, including a successful fermented soybean meal trial with HCMR and organizing an Aqua Industry regional conference in Rhodes, Greece, in April 2024. This strong partnership, further highlighted by our joint participation in AQUA 2024, yields excellent results. A special thank you to all the industry delegates who visited the USSEC booth and those who attended the conference. I also want to thank the USSEC admin team Dana Colquitt, Amanda Lowrance, Sierra Mckie, Albert Roda, and our collaborators, Lucio Reda and Euzilene Neves for their incredible efforts in preparing the booth and ensuring the whole activity ran smoothly. The 7th USSEC Regional Soybean Processing & Refining Conference – MENA has started at the Grosvenor House - Dubai. The event opened with insightful speeches from Brent Babb, USSEC's Regional Director for Africa, the Middle East, and Europe, who welcomed attendees and emphasized the key role of U.S. soybeans and Dr. Harrison Grafos, USDA/FAS Agricultural Attaché for the UAE, Qatar, Oman, and Kuwait. Grower leaders Jeffrey Sorenson, Director of the American Soybean Association; and Brent Gatton from the United Soybean Board had important presentations featuring the unique quality of U.S. Soybean. Jim Sutter ,CEO- USSEC, provided a compelling presentation on the "Soy Global Market Outlook," highlighting that since the 2015/2016 season, global demand for soy has surged by over 27%, reaching 410 million metric tons. He noted that despite the challenges of the COVID pandemic, global demand for soy remains robust, with the market expanding more in the last four years than in the previous period. Ravi d'avoir rencontré Emily French , fondatrice de Global Ag Protein, lors de la 11ème édition du USSEC's Maghreb Round Table for Poultry and Feed Industry à Madrid. Sa présentation sur les perspectives de la demande mondiale de soja/tourteau et de ma?s, en particulier concernant l'Algérie, était captivante. Emily a souligné l'importance de la Chine dans l'équilibre du marché mondial, soulignant ses défis macro-économiques actuels et leurs implications sur la demande en produits agricoles. Elle a également mis en avant l'opportunité que représente l'Europe, 2ème plus gros importateur mondial de soja et 1er importateur de tourteau, malgré un début d'année marqué par une baisse des importations. Handle it with Care! This was the key message I conveyed to the U.S. Soy customers participating in the U.S. Soybean Export Council (USSEC) 11th Maghreb Poultry and Feed Industry Roundtable held this week in Madrid, Spain. One crucial aspect of the feed industry profitability is its dominant role in broiler diets, where #soybeanmeal accounts for 45-53% of total #feedcosts. Given this significant cost share, preserving the quality of soybean meal from the crushing plant to end use is vital. Proper handling and storage are essential to prevent spoilage, moisture absorption, contamination, and cross-contamination, ensuring that its nutritional value remains intact. U.S. soybean meal offers significant advantages in animal nutrition, making it the preferred choice for non-ruminant animals. It is a high-quality, cost-effective protein source, providing over 50% of digestible amino acids and contributing 25% of metabolizable energy in broiler feeds. Its superior amino-acids availability reduces the need for synthetic supplements, and its ideal particle size promotes efficient enzyme action, enhancing digestion and animal growth. Additionally, U.S. soybean meal exhibits excellent flowability, reducing the risk of blockages in storage and feed systems, thus improving handling, transportation, and feed manufacturing efficiency. By maintaining optimal handling and storage conditions, the benefits of U.S. soybean meal- efficiency, high protein content, and digestibility - are fully realized, making it an indispensable component of cost-effective, high-performance broiler diets. The USSEC event in Madrid chaired by Brent Babb and Boussad Lami featured key discussions on the poultry and feed industry. Emily French provided insights into the global outlook on soybeans and corn, while Gordon Denny discussed U.S. soy exports. Gonzalo Mateos highlighted the nutritional benefits and superior quality of U.S. soybean meal in animal feed. Other sessions addressed poultry feed formulation challenges by Kees Geerse, the impact of mycotoxins MOHAMMEDI DAHMANE, and optimizing protein and digestibility by Carlos Dapoza. I’d like to express my gratitude to Gordon Denny for generously sharing his lifetime of experience in handling and storing soybean meal, and for encouraging my curiosity to learn more about this topic.
