America's Innovation Agency

关于我们

For over 200 years, the basic role of the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) has remained the same: to promote the progress of science and the useful arts by securing for limited times to inventors the exclusive right to their respective discoveries (Article 1, Section 8 of the United States Constitution). Under this system of protection, American industry has flourished. New products have been invented, new uses for old ones discovered, and employment opportunities created for millions of Americans. The strength and vitality of the U.S. economy depends directly on effective mechanisms that protect new ideas and investments in innovation and creativity. The continued demand for patents and trademarks underscores the ingenuity of American inventors and entrepreneurs. The USPTO is at the cutting edge of the Nation’s technological progress and achievement. The USPTO is a federal agency in the Department of Commerce. The USPTO occupies several interconnected buildings in Alexandria, Virginia. The office employs more than 14,000 people -- including engineers, scientists, attorneys, analysts, computer specialists -- all dedicated to protecting U.S. intellectual property rights. At the USPTO, the talents of all our colleagues enrich our vibrant workplace, and we celebrate and value each one.

Easier food prep is music to our ears! Thanks to inventors, we’re able to keep food for longer and serve it safely. Mary DeLeon in 1873 patented improvements in cooking apparatuses by combining a lamp and water reservoir to keep food heated, and in 1951, Borge Madsen patented a separable fastener that you know as the zipper top of Ziploc bags. We continue our Thanksgiving celebration with the Cade Museum for Creativity & Invention to highlight food, science and innovation. Join us to learn how to make a kazoo with food prep items from your home by heading to our YouTube channel: https://bit.ly/4fOU7Ag

His invention provides an improved fastener having two continuous inter-engageable strips, whereby a firm grip is obtained so that the two strips are held tightly together. Co-polymerization products. Patented June 6, 1939. 2,160,931. Ralph M. Wiley. Wiley discovered when vinylide chloride polymerized with monoers, it formed long chains that resulted in a film. The film - we know it as saran wrap - is a barrier against oxygen, moisture, chemicals and heat qualities that can protect food and slow spoiling.

This National Entrepreneurs Day, we're celebrating the startups and individuals that are the life blood of the American innovation ecosystem! To achieve our goal of helping ALL make their dream a reality, we have developed a new no-cost, on-demand, 2-hour Startup Certification Course that covers IP protection, cybersecurity, and funding to make sure innovators have the information they need to secure their IP and to scale their business. “Intellectual property, whether an invention, design, or brand, is a new business’ most valuable asset. And USPTO is here to help get it protected,” said Kathi Vidal, Under Secretary of Commerce for Intellectual Property. “But many startup founders and investors we’ve talked with said there was a lack of information, and more importantly time, to focus on IP protection. So that’s where USPTO stepped in to create this new resource specifically with the needs – and limitations – of founders in mind.” Start building a stronger future with this free resource ?? https://bit.ly/40VNac5

Today, on Women’s Entrepreneurship Day, we celebrate Beulah Louise Henry, famously known as “Lady Edison.” A self-taught inventor with an unstoppable drive, Henry visualized solutions to everyday problems and turned them into reality. Over her prolific career, she claimed more than 100 inventions and 49 patents, working across multiple industries and earning her place as one of the most inventive minds of her time. Among her remarkable patents are a bobbinless sewing machine that revolutionized high-volume stitching, a typewriter attachment that made document duplication cleaner and easier, and toys with lifelike features such as movable eyes and lips.
