The Rapid Microwave Prototyping System (RaMPS), a U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) patented mechanical and electrical hardware design ‘toolkit’, is changing the game for microwave circuit development! RaMPS is a bolt-together hardware kit that leverages commercial microwave modular circuits to enable the rapid development and deployment of microwave systems, while reducing costs and increasing efficiency. NRL had the opportunity to showcase the technology at the Surface Navy National Symposium to top U.S. Navy officials earlier this year. Near real-time images from NOAA’s first Compact Coronagraph (CCOR-1) onboard the GOES-19 satellite are now publicly accessible! This new telescope monitors the sun’s outer atmosphere (corona) and detects eruptions called coronal mass ejections (CMEs). This will improve NOAA’s space weather forecasts that help protect our satellites, power grids and more. Fun fact: Did you know that our planet “photobombs” the view, creating a bright flash called ‘earthshine’ twice a day? You can see this occur in the imagery above. Even the moon drops in daily! NOTE: Until GOES-19 becomes operational, all CCOR-1 imagery and data remain preliminary and non-operational. Learn more: https://lnkd.in/eT6NuqND

The highly prestigious Robert J. Collier Trophy, awarded by the National Aeronautic Association (NAA) since 1911 for the greatest achievement in aeronautics or astronautics in America, will be bestowed upon the Parker Solar Probe (Parker) Team, led by the NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration and the The Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, on June 12, 2025 in Washington, D.C. ?? On December 24, 2024, Parker ventured deep into the Sun's corona, reaching an altitude of just 3.83 million miles above the solar surface. This distance is seven times closer to the Sun than any previous spacecraft has ever operated. Parker also set a new record as the fastest human-made object in history, achieving a peak speed of approximately 430,000 mph—three times faster than anything prior. The mission, which launched in 2018, marked a new era of scientific discovery and establishes a new standard for spacecraft performance. Parker’s advances in thermal protection, autonomy, and power management demonstrated significant technical advancements that will influence the future of space exploration. Partners include: Aerojet (now L3Harris Technologies), BWX Technologies, Inc., CARBON-CARBON ADVANCED TECHNOLOGIES, Hamilton Sundstrand (now RTX), U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, Northrop Grumman, Plasma Processes LLC, Princeton University, Center for Astrophysics | Harvard & Smithsonian, SolAero by Rocket Lab , Tricor Metals, and the University of California, Berkeley. Medal of Honor Day ??? On National Medal of Honor Day, we remember and pay tribute to those who went above and beyond the call of duty. Their actions, often in the face of impossible odds, exemplify the highest ideals of service and sacrifice. #OTD in 1863, Secretary of War, Edwin Stanton presented the first Medals of Honor to six members of “Andrews Raiders” for their volunteering and participation during an American Civil War raid in April of 1862. This day was established by Congress to “foster public appreciation and recognition of Medal of Honor Recipients” and was first celebrated on March 25, 1991. NRL thanks each Medal of Honor recipient for their valor, dedication, and sacrifice. The use of hydrogen in key applications can lead to increased electrical efficiency and energy density, increased operational range, reduced thermal and audible signature, and reduced maintenance requirements; ultimately increasing lethality of the force and decreasing logistical sustainment requirements. "NRL’s Hydrogen Small Unit Power (H-SUP), is a portable fuel cell electric generator with greater energy per weight than batteries and lower audible and thermal signatures than combustion generators" said NRL Research Engineer Kevin Cronin. "It was a great opportunity to include H-SUP with HyTEC for USMC operator testing and evaluation. Warfighter feedback is a critical component of the technology development process and will be used to inform requirement definition and future R&D activities." NRL has developed fuel cell technology and the H-SUP system with sponsorship from the Office of Naval Research, Office of the Secretary of Defense Manufacturing Science and Technology Program, Naval Air Systems Command and the USMC Expeditionary Energy Office, and with collaboration from industry partners Northwest UAV and Noble Gas Systems. https://lnkd.in/eZD7NwUS #NRL #usmc #AmericasNavy250 #USNavy250 #resiliency #revolutionize #readiness #optimize #navalpower #people #partnerships #collaboration #securethefuture #lethality #warfighter

On this day in 1958, the Vanguard I satellite was launched into Earth orbit. Vanguard I was the first solar-powered satellite, enabling it to continue transmitting for several years — other satellites of the time relied on batteries and only lasted weeks. The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) conducted the first American satellite program, named Project Vanguard, between 1955 and 1959, becoming the prototype for much of what developed as the U.S. space program. Vanguard I was the second artificial satellite successfully placed into Earth orbit by the United States and although communication with the satellite ceased in 1964, it remains the oldest man-made satellite in orbit today!
