On December 19, 2024, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) performed critical testing on the Blue Robotics "Blue Boat" Unmanned Surface Vessel (USV) at NOAA's National Data Buoy Center (NDBC) basin in Stennis Space Center, MS. This evaluation aimed to establish baseline power demand and operational requirements, assessing the platform's viability for sensing operations in calm offshore environments. This research supports NOAA and NRL's ongoing commitment to advancing maritime technology. #USV #NRL #OceanResearch #AutonomousSystems #NDBC #StennisSpaceCenter #NRLresearch #ScientificAdvancements #scientificresearch #research #engineering #science #technology (Photos courtesy of NASA) US Navy United States Department of Defense NASA - National Aeronautics and Space Administration NOAA: National Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration

U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) researcher Matthew Laskoski, Ph.D., will be inducted as a Fellow of the National Academy of Inventors (NAI) at the NAI 14th Annual Meeting on June 26, in Atlanta, Georgia. “I am honored to be receiving this recognition,” Laskoski said. “Even though this is an individual award, I would not be recognized if it wasn’t for the tireless effort of those who I work with, who are the co-inventors on all of my patents.” Read more about this prestigious recognition here: https://lnkd.in/eahv6tGH #NRL #people #partnerships #resiliency #revolutionize #innovation #innovate #STEM #usnavy #lab #education #scientist #laboratory #NAI #NAIFellow #fellow National Academy of Inventors US Navy United States Department of Defense

The U.S. Naval Research Laboratory's (NRL) Naval Center for Space Technology (NCST) commissioned a Variable-Speed Hypersonic Wind Tunnel for the Hypersonic Aerodynamics & Propulsion Laboratory at NRL headquarters Washington, D.C. This significant advancement in experimental aerodynamics provides a critical capability for hypersonic research and development. This unique, mid-size facility enables long-duration testing with real-time control of both altitude and speed. The system utilizes pressurized air driven through a precisely engineered convergent-divergent planar nozzle, achieving sonic velocity at the throat and subsequent supersonic expansion within the test section that is controllable from transonic speeds to more than Mach 5. The dynamic control of the nozzle throat area allows for real-time manipulation of the test section Mach number, providing unparalleled flexibility in experimental design. A demonstration of the wind tunnel's capabilities was recently conducted for NRL's Commanding Officer and Executive Officer, highlighting its potential to significantly contribute to the advancement of hypersonic technologies and risk reduction for flight programs. This investment enhances NRL's commitment to cutting-edge research and ensuring the nation's continued leadership in this critical area. #hypersonics #windtunnel #NRL #NavalResearch #science #technology #engineering #aerodynamics #revolutionize #innovation US Navy United States Department of Defense

THANKS to Office of Space Commerce and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for having me be part of their great Circular Space Economy Seminar today. It was a great discussion on how government, commercial industries and academia can together enable a better future in space that pays dividends on terrestrial life. I was on a panel discussing Emerging Technologies and was honored to represent our great U.S. Naval Research Laboratory team discussing how our work in satellite servicing contributes in this domain.

Big thanks to the Office of Space Commerce and National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) for setting up and hosting the first of what may be recurring events to tackle the creation of the Circular Economy in Space! Honored to be on the stage with other thought/action leaders helping make this happen, U.S. Naval Research Laboratory, CisLunar Industries, Stoke Space, XCMR and Space Phoenix, plus many others! Side note: Attended Commercial Space Federation (CSF) conference the day before... hmmm: I observed there may be non-convergent focus between "human-rated" LEO based economy with future space stations and the broader ISAM non-human rated platform(s) economy. IMHO they are directly synergistic, thus we may need to engage in broader discussion to educate both need to exist, which may well help raise the tide of the commercial potential for all... Kudo's and shout out to fellow CONFERS | The Consortium for Execution of Rendezvous and Servicing Operations member Jon Beam from Rogue Space Systems Corporation for helping corral this event from industry, and providing insight and thoughts on how collaboration amongst us may be the key to change culture... that is, end of mission for any satellite/spacecraft no longer has to be end of life! Today there are multiple companies poised to add new value to satellites, post launch... Time to crack open the "undiscovered markets" that here-to-fore were only dreamed of... Thanks again Commerce for helping lead the way! My gosh this is an exciting time...

The Stennis Business Roundtable (SBR), formerly called the the Stennis Business Council (SBC), provided an excellent platform for small businesses to expand in the region around NASA’s Stennis Space Center. This particular SBR focused on creating networking opportunities and offering valuable insights into contracting possibilities with the Navy at Stennis. Direct access to agency briefings and industry leaders is crucial for businesses to stay ahead, especially in understanding the specific needs of the Navy and other large organizations in the area. A big thank you to our outstanding speakers, Jason McKenna U.S. Naval Meteorology and Oceanography Command | Jamie Miller MS Gulf Coast Business Council | Edward Cheron & Chynna Hyde LATG | Justin Veazey & Yuri Cruz Booz Allen Hamilton | John Cousins General Dynamics Information Technology | Eugene Sandberg Radiance Technologies | Richard Crout U.S. Naval Research Laboratory ??
