The Kiefer Foundation was founded in 2016 following the death of Steven Kiefer's son Mitchel, who was killed by a distracted driver. The foundation's mission is to bring an end to distracted driving and all associated crashes and fatalities through three pillars: raising awareness, leveraging technology, and shaping legislation. “I hate to think that people must have a personal story before changing their behavior. It’s been one year since Missouri’s hands-free law took effect. In just one year, the state’s reduced distracted driving by 5.1%, preventing over 1,000 crashes, 660 injuries, 5 fatalities, and $22 million in economic damages. The law is part of a growing trend. Hands-free legislation has helped reduce smartphone-based distracted driving not only in Missouri but also in states like Ohio, Alabama, and Michigan. The Distraction Action Forum in Washington, DC, brought together experts from National Highway Traffic Safety Administration NHTSA, Virginia Tech Transportation Institute, and more at U.S. Department of Transportation to explore how data can drive improvements in road safety.
