In celebration of #HispanicHeritageMonth and #AmericanArchivesMonth, we’re highlighting Mario Lopez Feliu, a Cuban-born archivist who made significant contributions to the preservation of historic documents. Feliu began his journey at the U.S. National Archives in 1946 through a training fellowship while working at the National Archives of Cuba, where he led the preservation department. This opportunity was part of a program aimed at training archivists from other republics in the Western Hemisphere, supported by the U.S. Department of State. During his six-month fellowship in Washington, DC, Feliu honed his skills in document preservation, particularly in the Division of Cleaning and Rehabilitation, focusing on methods to preserve fragile historical records. After returning to Cuba, Feliu brought back reproductions of WWII surrender documents for an exhibition. In 1962, he permanently joined the National Archives in Washington, DC, as a preservation expert. His work in lamination was critical in ensuring the protection of countless documents during his time. Feliu’s legacy as a preservationist endures as part of the National Archives' ongoing mission to safeguard history.
