When St. Louis Mayor Tishaura Jones was elected in 2021, her city — like many cities across the United States — was struggling to navigate the devastating impacts of COVID-19, including a pandemic-driven rise in crime. Just four years later, the mayor’s commitment to investing in key partnerships, using data-driven solutions and tackling the root causes of crime has transformed St. Louis into a national leader in public safety. The results are evident. In a State of Public Safety report, overall crime in St. Louis was down by 15% in 2024. Homicides were at an 11-year low and 40% lower than 2020, when the COVID-19 pandemic unleashed the national crime wave. And the city’s positive trends are continuing: There were half as many homicides in January 2025 as January 2024, according to new data released by the city’s police department. “Today, the city is safer, stronger, and healthier than we were last year. And next year, we’ll be safer, stronger, and healthier than we are today.” Under Mayor Jones’ leadership, St. Louis is leading cities across the nation toward a safer and more resilient future.
