The University of Southern Mississippi’s Roger F. Wicker Center for Ocean Enterprise recently partnered with the Mississippi Air National Guard’s Gulfport Combat Readiness Training Center, Parsons Corporation,?and SeaTrac Systems, Inc.,?in a groundbreaking exercise. Together, they integrated a TReX?radio frequency (RF) emitter system onto an autonomous surface vessel, creating an uncrewed offshore mobile node designed to simulate a potential threat for U.S. Air Force fighter jets. Major Stephen “Scrape” Vrabic expressed his appreciation for the partnership, stating, “I am very proud of the partnership cultivated between the Mississippi Air National Guard Gulfport Combat Readiness Training Center (CRTC) and the University of Southern Mississippi, which recently culminated in a successful test of a low-cost, sea-based RF emulator system?employed against our air assets. The successful test of the sea-based system, which is designed to mimic?threat signals of interest, is the first step in creating an overwater Electronic Warfare (EW) Range off the coast of Mississippi. Mississippi’s overwater EW Range will enhance Warfighter training and provide a training complex unlike any other in the nation." #OceanEnterprise?#MississippiAirNationalGuard?#DefenseInnovation?#USMResearch?#AutonomousVessels?#Partnership?#MississippiCoast?#EWRange?#USAirForce?#ParsonsCorporation?#SeaTrac?#TReX

We had the pleasure of welcoming students from Jackson State University to the USM Marine Research Center. During their visit, the students explored autonomous vehicle operations, magnetics, hypoxia research, and the innovative USM CubeNet system. They also had the unique opportunity to tour our research vessel, R/V Point Sur, and even try their hand at piloting an autonomous boat! We’re grateful to Dr. Thoma for organizing this visit and bringing the students to the coast. It was an enriching day for everyone involved, and we hope the experience inspired the next generation of marine researchers #MarineResearch #OceanScience #STEMEducation #AutonomousTechnology #MarineTechnology #StudentExperience #FutureScientists #JacksonStateUniversity #GulfCoastResearch
