OPPORTUNITY: Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) is seeking a Postdoctoral Research Associate who will focus on supporting the advancement of plasma heating and current drive and integrated radio frequency (RF) technology development as part of programs supported by the U.S. DOE Office of Science Fusion Energy Sciences (FES) Program and other related public and private partnerships. This role is expected to involve the development of rf materials and technology across sub-scale and large test stands and facilities that support projects like U.S. ITER and the Material Plasma Exposure experiment (MPEX), and the U.S. ITER project which are supported by the U.S. DOE Office of Science Fusion Energy Sciences (FES). #fusion #fusionenergy #fusionforward #stemjobs #stemcareers #stemedu https://lnkd.in/gCweyn2g

Deuterium and tritium, both isotopes of hydrogen, are generally accepted as the most promising pair of fuels for fusion energy production. ?? Altering the properties and proportions of these fuels could overcome some of the major barriers to making fusion a practical energy source. Lab researchers Ahmed Diallo, Jason Parisi and Jacob Schwartz have identified how to use a process known as spin polarization to adjust the quantum properties of the fuel for peak efficiency. ?? By aligning the fuels' quantum spin and changing the ratio of deuterium to tritium, the approach could boost tritium burn efficiency by up to 10 times, reducing tritium needs and lowering fusion system costs. ?? “Now that we have achieved and repeated fusion ignition,” said Tammy Ma, lead for LLNL’s inertial fusion energy institutional initiative, “the Lab is rapidly applying our decades of know-how into solving the core physics and engineering challenges that come with the monumental task of building the fusion ecosystem necessary for a laser fusion power plant. The mass production of ignition-grade targets is one of these, and cutting-edge 3D printing could help get us there.” #fusion #fusionenergy #fusionforward https://lnkd.in/gwjYAVMY
