Our journey to becoming an internationally recognized thought leader across the global and national security environment
关于我们
Today’s national security environment is increasingly complex and covers whole-of-society problems such as extremism, chem/bio threats, climate change, disinformation, transnational crime, and cybercrime. This environment is not only serviced by science and technology, but is driven by them. Advances in areas such as artificial intelligence, robotics, extended reality, quantum computing, and biometrics will require national security policymakers to understand technological complexities never before considered. These complexities further demonstrate the need for broad and highly integrated solutions to properly inform policy. The University of South Florida recognizes this trend and has identified global and national security as a strategic area of focus. The intent is to combine research, community partnerships, academic programs, and federal funding opportunities to take full advantage of USF’s emergence as the nation’s fastest-rising university over the last decade. The Global and National Security Institute will lead this strategic effort at USF. Today’s policy landscape is becoming increasingly competitive and crowded, addressing challenges exacerbated by advancing technology and an increasingly globalized and networked society. These challenges require a clearly different alternative that offers practical, actionable solutions to policy makers to 21st-century security challenges for decision makers at the local, state, national, and global level, focused on the intersection of security policy and technology. It will also serve as the entry portal for USF’s broad cooperation with Department of Defense (DOD) and associated agencies. GNSI will connect regularly with leaders and experts from academia, government, and the private sector, and operate across three distinct Strategic Areas of Focus: 1) Science and Technology, 2) Human Dynamics and Social Behavior, and 3) Cybersecurity.

Very glad you participated in the conference and were able to reconnect with former colleagues and friends. Looking forward to reading more of your thoughts.

I attended the Global and National Security Institute (GNSI) conference, “Rethinking Afghanistan” today. Many productive conversations about our 20 year war in Afghanistan. ???? My favorite part of the conference was reconnecting with P. Michael McKinley , my Ambasssor in Kabul when I was the Deputy Spox. Amb McKinley is still one of the kindest and smartest souls in the national security policy space. His remarks were very candid, and I cannot do them justice, but here are a few key takeaways. Mistakes over the course of the 20 year war: ? The USG underestimated the Taliban ? The USG overestimated the capacity (and numbers due to ghost soldiers on the rolls)of the Afghan National Security Forces. ? The National Unity Government was never truly unified. ? The intra-Afghan negotiations were doomed because we let the Taliban know we were going to withdraw. Moving forward, Amb McKinley noted that we should focus on the following: ??Maintain an ability to respond to threats emanating from Afghanistan. ?? Address the humanitarian crisis in Afghanistan. ??Keep indirect channels of communication open with the Taliban. ??Work with the diaspora ?? Address the rights of women and girls ??Process the backlog of Special Immigrant Visas I will write more about the conference in a separate post. Stay tuned! #Afghanistanpolicy #nationalsecuritypolicy

Yesterday’s conference was an important day for GNSI, as this was the opening act to a much larger GNSI research project focused on #Afghanistan. Collaborating with the Afghanistan War Commission, as well as Near East South Asia Center for Strategic Studies and the Middle East Institute has given our project a tremendous boost. ?? Our work this week will be unveiled, at least in part, at our next conference scheduled for May 2025 in Washington, DC. Look for more information over the next few months!
