  • Demand for Biomedical Engineers Drives USF to Expand Department GREAT ARTICLE ?? With a growing community of dedicated students, alumni and faculty, Chairman Robert Frisina hopes USF Medical Engineering will continue shaping the future of biomedical innovation and positioning itself as a national leader in the field, right here in the Tampa Bay community.

  • Boston Scientific Seeks USF's Biomed Skilled Seniors Dr. Souheil Zekri, Director of the Senior Capstone class - where students create a biomedical device from idea to reality, welcomed BSCI's Erica Gray, Wendy Silverman-Allen,MBA and Patrick F. Thistlethwaite, MBA. This top team work in Interventional Cardiology Therapies, like cardiac rhythm management and electrophysiology. Advancements in this area necessitate highly skilled candidates who know both intricate device dynamics and physiology, a perfect description of the USF Medical Engineering curriculum. Boston Scientific is a Fortune 500 company whose 15,000+ products help treat 37M patients annually. Students had time to interact with the BSCI professionals who then visited Dr. George Spirou's cutting edge imaging lab where PhD student, Etienne Labastie demonstrated syGlass, Inc, virtual reality bioimaging that can accelerate discovery, analysis, and scientific communication. USF Medical Engineering Graduate Student, Isabelle Eskanos, Wins Best Poster Award at the Florida Semiconductor Summit February 27th, Isabelle Eskanos, NRT Trainee*, received the Best Poster Award for her presentation titled "Surface-Engineerable Piezoelectric PVDF Films for Tissue Engineering." (Major Advisor: Albert Kim, PhD Kim). She was recognized for the outstanding quality of her research, the design and organization of her poster, and her excellent presentation skills. She is on her way to achieving one of the NRT goals of 'becoming a world leader in the semiconductor field.' "Dr. Albert Kim (my Principal Investigator) and I worked closely on this poster, and I received invaluable help from Sophia Selvarajan. Their contribution made this poster possible and this win I share with my entire team. In my future work, I will honor their support via the commitment to excellence they've inspired in me." Dr. Ashok Kumar (USF NRT Program Director) and NRT Trainees, (Isabelle Eskanos, John Maurer, & Ahmed Ahmed) participated in the Summit at the L3Harris Technologies High Technology Center with UF, UCF, USF, FIU, and University of Miami. Dr. Kumar participated in the panel discussion, “Advancing Semiconductor Innovation: Bridging the Talent Pipeline for the Aerospace and Defense Industry” with other panelists, Dr. Amy Bonecutter-Leonard (L3 Harris Technology), Dr. John Harris (Florida Institute of Technology), & Dr. Tiffany Barnes (Valencia College). University of South Florida has an NRT program called STEP-UP which focuses on microelectronics education and training including semiconductor design and manufacturing. https://usfnrt.usf.edu/ USF Medical Engineering: https://lnkd.in/eUTXqvmc https://lnkd.in/eKkCUTbi * NRT: NSF (National Science Foundation) Research Traineeship is a prestigious, national program.

Congratulations, E. Morgan Amick, for your award and wonderfully representing the USF Medical Engineering department. Using syGlass, Inc software, Morgan's research focuses on the early developmental stages of the auditory brainstem with the goal of understanding of how cell populations change over time. This foundational research could help to create treatments for neurodevelopmental diseases such as autism spectrum disorder. Morgan is mentored by Dr. George Spirou at the USF Connectomics lab.
