So, we're now talking full product analytics set up, in just 3 days. Plus, no product/engineering bandwidth spent. Plus, unlimited iterations on events covering all subsequent product features. Okay, that's quite something. ??

While we are ourselves against events auto-capture when it comes to product analytics, we realise that there's a reason it exists. To be honest, setting up product analytics is hard: - someone has to plan events & properties - someone has to code them - someone has to test the flow of events - and this repeats for every new feature released Now, for teams which are early in their journey.... teams which don't have so much bandwidth to do all of this internally, there has been only one solution SO FAR. That's events auto-capture. Heap | by Contentsquare is built on it, Amplitude relaunched it, Mixpanel once had it, and PostHog has it for a while now. In today's article, we go specifically into PostHog events autocapture. However, as we wrote above, this was the solution SO FAR. In the new world, with the advent of AI agents, there's a new possibility - one where AI agents do the task of planning, implementing and testing event tracking. But, let this be a topic for later. In a previous post, we mentioned how we interviewed more than a hundred PMs in the last few months. We noticed that PMs who have played around with data and have used product analytics tools are quite familiar with "tracking plans". But the same is not the case with other PMs who are starting to go deep into product analytics for the first time. They have to figure out ways to learn - what are events and properties? - what user actions to capture as events? - how to name them? - what extra info to capture, to ease implementation? - etc. So, we scraped the internet, and put together a bunch of template event tracking plans, which can be useful while getting started. What exactly is event tracking? Yes, we hear that question often... at meetups, at dinner parties, etc. and (can we say it?) it boils our blood. If we have to give a one-liner, its this "Capture every action a user does in the product, in the form of an event and that's it - that's event tracking". But, is the answer really that simple? The thing with one-liners is that they often miss out on nuances, but we don't want that.
