Last week I attended the FIDO Alliance Authenticate Conference. Was great to catch up with so many old friends and colleagues. A few observations are below: ? User-bound passkeys (ie FaceID, TouchID) are experiencing tremendous traction in the market. From Amazon to Google to HomeDepot to Visa and MaterCard, using passkeys to go passwordless is working. ? The platforms (Apple, Android, Microsoft) making user-bound passkeys syncable and exportable have made them far more usable, but opened a massive security hole in the process. Companies relying on user-bound passkeys will have no context to where they were created or where they were being used from. If the consumer’s account where passkeys are stored is hacked, the fraudster has quite literally the keys to the kingdom. ? Almost no one was focused on software solutions that enabled a universal “possession factor” for MFA. Being able to identify the browser/app/device provides for a seamless user experience, as it is invisible. And can be paired with biometrics for a great passwordless foundation. ? Device side and server side biometrics both have their place. And we’ll continue to see them both used in a way that protects privacy and increases security while providing a great user experience. There were a number of interesting side conversations around how the EU would view platform biometrics given that user-bound passkeys aren’t really bound to a user’s biometrics. Will be watching this one unfold. Lastly, I was very encouraged by the receptivity for Ideem's device-bound passkeys that make 2FA easy and invisible, for everyone, all the time. Keeping building!
