U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Munro (WMSL 755) crews interdict a vessel suspected of smuggling drugs in international waters of the Eastern Pacific Ocean, late October 2024. Upon their recent return, the crew offloaded over 29,000 pounds of cocaine, valued at approximately $335.8 million. Yesterday, the Department of Homeland security released a set of recommendations for the safe and secure development and deployment of AI in critical infrastructure, the “Roles and Responsibilities Framework for Artificial Intelligence in Critical Infrastructure”. This first-of-its kind resource was developed by and for entities at each layer of the AI supply chain: cloud and compute providers, AI developers, and critical infrastructure owners and operators – as well as the civil society and public sector entities that protect and advocate for consumers. We are proud to announce the opening of our newest Coast Guard unit, U.S. Coast Guard Air Station Ventura! The ribbon cutting and commissioning ceremony was held today, marking the establishment of the newest Coast Guard air station in 25 years. The new air station is located at Naval Base Ventura County and features a $70 million state-of-the-art, 48,000 square-foot hangar, and a 12,000 square-foot administration facility, ensuring that Coast Guard personnel have the resources needed to carry out their vital missions. This new facility is expected to house three MH-60 Jayhawk helicopters and approximately 100 personnel, significantly enhancing the Coast Guard's capabilities in the region. “The establishment of Air Station Ventura is a critical development for the Coast Guard’s operations within the Eleventh District area of responsibility,” said Rear Adm. Joseph R. Buzzella, commander of the Eleventh Coast Guard District. “This new station offers ready resources that provide safety and security to the maritime community. This is a monumental day for the aircrews and for the community in which they serve." These dedicated lifesavers included Makah and Quileute surfmen, such as As-chik-abik, Que-dessa, Tsos-et-oos, and Tsul-ab-oos. Except for Native American scouts employed by the U.S. Army, this station was the earliest Native American unit in federal service!
