USC Arcadia Hospital Celebrates Donate Life Month ? The USC Arcadia Hospital team joined with OneLegacy this week to celebrate National Donate Life Month by flying the Donate Life flag over our hospital to help inspire people to register as organ, eye, and tissue donors. We also fly the flag to recognize and honor those that have saved lives through the gift of donation. “The dedicated staff members from both OneLegacy and our hospital share a very similar mission: In our own unique way, we strive to do all in our power to save lives and improve the quality of life for our patients,” said hospital President and CEO Ike Mmeje. “National Donate Life Month recognizes the generosity of those who have saved and enhanced lives by becoming organ, eye, and tissue donors, while also highlighting the critical need for more people to sign up to be donors.” More than 46,000 lifesaving transplants were performed in the U.S. in 2023, an increase of nearly 9 percent from 2022. However, the need for lifesaving transplants continues. Currently, there are more than 20,000 people in California who are waiting for a lifesaving organ transplant, but there are simply not enough donors to meet the growing need. USC Arcadia Hospital Opens New Intermediate Care Unit The opening of our new Intermediate Care Unit at USC Arcadia Hospital has been a great success. Since the ribbon cutting in February, the 12-bed unit located in what was previously our Respiratory ICU accommodates patients who no longer require intensive care unit-level care, but need more frequent monitoring than what is available on our Med/Surg units. Since the unit opened, availability of IMCU beds is helping the ICU and Emergency Department by reducing wait times for patients. Patients admitted to the IMCU are evaluated every eight hours to ensure that they are receiving the appropriate level of care. A multidisciplinary taskforce of physicians, nurses and ancillary personnel collaborated initially to delineate the criteria for admission to the IMCU, which will be strictly followed. The IMCU will be staffed 24/7 by a Nurse Practitioner, with oversight by the on-site intensivist physician in the ICU.
