CPL Charles Chibitty was one of 13 Comanche Soldiers who landed in France on D-Day in 1944 and used a coded form of their language to transmit secure messages. These Native American Soldiers became known as Code Talkers. Chibitty was born in Oklahoma in 1921 and grew up speaking the language of his tribe. When he attended school as a child, however, he was punished for speaking in his native tongue. In early 1941, he enlisted in the Army along with 16 other Comanche, who were trained as radio men. Their primary mission was to create a coded language the Germans could not decipher using their native tongue. Their code was never broken. During World War II, Chibitty earned five campaign battle stars and received a cavalry officer's saber from his tribe, an honor comparable to the Medal of Honor among the Comanche. In 1999, the U.S. Department of Defense recognized Chibitty in the Hall of Heroes inside the Pentagon for his extraordinary bravery and achievements. In November 2001, Chibitty was presented with the Knowlton Award by the Secretary of Defense in recognition of his significant contributions to U.S. military intelligence efforts. #SoldierForLife #USArmySFL #NativeAmericanHeritageMonth #CodeTalkers
