  • The U.S. Army's 250th Birthday is coming up this June, and we are really excited that we get the opportunity to share with you some of the amazing individuals who have been part of the narrative of the Army Story as we get closer to this important Army milestone. And since today is World Storytelling Day, we thought this was an appropriate time to get started! Private Marcelino Serna emigrated to Texas from Mexico in 1916 when he was 20 years old. Despite not yet being a U.S. citizen, he enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1917 in order to show his dedication to his new country. When it was later determined that he was not a U.S. citizen, the Army offered to discharge him, but Serna declined. Serna displayed courage under fire on multiple occasions during his Army service. In September 1918, after 12 Soldiers in his unit were killed by machine gun fire, Serna volunteered to advance on the machine gun position and was able to disable it with grenades, killing six German soldiers and capturing another eight. Two weeks later, Serna again advanced on a solo mission against a German trench and single-handedly killed 26 men while taking another 24 as prisoners. While he was in the hospital recovering from injuries at the end of the war, General John J. Pershing presented him with the Distinguished Service Cross award for his actions, the second-highest U.S. military decoration. He was also awarded with two French Croix de Guerre for his bravery. Private Serna was discharged from the U.S. Army in May 1919, and in 1924, he finally became a U.S. citizen. He continued to serve his country as a plumber at William Beaumont Army Medical Center until his retirement in 1961. #SoldierForLife #USArmySFL #SoldierStories #Army250

  • Time for #MissionSFL idea No. 2 - another way that you can #BeASoldierForLife is by being a MENTOR. All transitioning service members and their families need mentors to help them find their way in their new post-service world. Transition, finding a new job, or moving to a new community is a challenge, but if you have someone there to guide you - someone who has already been down the road you are traveling to guide you on your journey - it can make all the difference in the world. Whether you are a #SoldierForLife or not (because civilian advice is just as valuable), you can impart your experience from your career, your community, or your life on military and veteran families in a way that might be life-changing for you both. Or you can connect them with mentorship programs that you yourself have used and found to be beneficial. Have mentorship ideas or resources that you like? Please share them with us! #USArmySFL

Those sneaky leprechauns were looking for shiny new things to get their hands on yesterday and, unfortunately, they took a liking to our brand new website (https://lnkd.in/eyC7Bpt). We are in the process of trying to get it back from them at the moment, but, until then, please bear with us while it's offline as we conduct our search and rescue operation. ??
