Maj. David Nixon, 18th Field Artillery Brigade, recently sat down with Muscle & Fitness to discuss how he is helping change the culture within the US Army on healthy sleep habits by working with the Brigades Holistic Health and Fitness, #H2F, Human Performance Team. “Sleep’s benefits are too vast, and detriment is too comprehensive to be ignored by the military,” said Nixon. In the 2021 Health of the Force Report, the Army Public Health Center found that only 38% of soldiers attained seven or more hours of sleep, and the CDC recommended the amount of sleep needed daily. Prioritizing holistic health and readiness enables our Soldiers to be more lethal and survivable on the battlefield when their nation calls. Holistic Health and Fitness, #H2F, is revolutionizing how the US Army prepares Soldiers for combat. Through this non-commissioned officer-led, subject-matter-expert-advised System, Soldiers are returning from injury faster and performing better on rifle marksmanship. The 18th Field Artillery Brigade Steel Fitness Trainer program allows the Human Performance Team embedded within their brigade to work in partnership with Soldiers to refine physical training program development and injury prevention. "A common saying in the Mental Domain is that to FAIL is just a First Attempt In Learning. Holistic Health and Fitness or #H2F is focused on training for high performance, though as a secondary benefit, these skills also build a resilience reservoir to pull from when a stressful moment happens from an obstacle, setback, or failure," said Maj. Erin Stone. Maj. Stone has served in a variety of roles across the US Army working on multidisciplinary behavioral health teams to improve war fighter communication, problem-solving, and critical thinking skills. " You get off that bus, and they’re there to transform you from a civilian to a Soldier,” Staff Sgt. Vontrella Jeffries said. Never did she imagine that one day she would become a drill sergeant herself, yet on April 10 she graduated from The US Army Drill Sergeant Academy at Fort Jackson. Jeffries had considered attending the school for a while, as several of her mentors are former Drill Sergeants themselves and thought she’d be a good fit. The US Army announced they are expanding the number of #H2F Performance Teams to be fielded throughout the Army based on the initial ROI and feedback from Soldiers and leaders. “The [Chief of Staff of the Army] and I looked at each other as like, is this an Army program or not?” asked GEN James Mingus, Vice Chief of Staff of the Army. “The answer is it's an Army program, this is for the entire Army, so we're going to figure out how we lay that in so that everybody can have the benefits of what Holistic Health and Fitness can bring to them.”
