Dan Noble, Baltimore District's #programmanager for the Spring Valley Formerly Used Defense Site, located in northwest Washington, D.C., recently presented history and information on the project to students in a "Threat of Chemical Weapons" course at American University. ?? During the World War I‐era, the site was known as the American University Experiment Station and was used by the U.S. government for research and testing of #chemical agents, equipment, and #munitions. Today, the site encompasses approximately 1,600 private properties, including several embassies and foreign properties, as well as the American University and Wesley Seminary. ?? The Baltimore District has lead investigation and cleanup actions at the Spring Valley "formerly used defense site" (#FUDS, for short), including the identification and removal of arsenic‐contaminated soil, a groundwater investigation, and the search for additional munitions, both in burial pits and isolated items on residential properties. ?? The most complex #remediation took place in the nearby Glenbrook Road area. By the conclusion of the project in August 2021, the team had remediated, removed, or recovered 556 munition items (23 of them filled with chemical agents), 2,139 pounds of laboratory debris, 53 intact and sealed glass containers of chemical agent, and 7,500 tons of contaminated soil, all close to occupied private properties, a major university campus, and public streets — contributing to the safety and wellbeing of not only the Spring Valley neighborhood and American University but the National Capital Region as a whole.
