?? Our maintenance #dredging of the Baltimore Harbor and approach channels, which concludes this month for the 2025 season, has been a part of the USACE effort to energize economic development in the region for nearly 200 years. ?? The technology and scale of this ongoing mission (seen here during Baltimore District Commander Col. Francis Pera's recent visit to the current dredging operations) only grew with time as the Helen Delich Bentley Port of Baltimore became one of the world's leading commercial ports. ?? Some early history: ?? In 1830, the Baltimore Harbor was surveyed and determined to have a controlling depth of 17 feet from the #ChesapeakeBay to Fort McHenry. By 1836, Congress appropriated funds to dredge the entrance channels, although no channel dimensions were specified in the law. This dredging was completed in 1838. ?? Later, the River & Harbor Act of 1852 authorized a depth of 22 feet from Fort McHenry to the Chesapeake Bay off Swan Point. As railroad service expanded into the harbor, the city was interested in deepening the channel to encourage development and attract the deeper-draft vessels of the day. This dredging began in 1853 and continued until the Civil War, culminating in a six-miles-long channel with an average depth of 23.5 feet. For context, today's main channel from Cape Henry to Fort McHenry is authorized to a depth of 50 feet. ?? ? Baltimore District on March 5, 2025, issued its Section 10/404/408 permit decision for the rebuild of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, granting the Maryland Transportation Authority permission to construct the bridge that will reconnect the I-695 Baltimore Beltway and improve community accessibility lost following the collapse of the original structure that claimed the lives of six Baltimoreans. ?? “Less than one year after the catastrophic collapse of the Francis Scott Key Bridge, Baltimore District is proud to have provided fair and efficient permitting efforts to enable the construction of a new bridge,” said Baltimore District Commander Col. Francis Pera. “To have both removed the bridge wreckage and issued relevant permits for its reconstruction on this timetable is a testament to our dedicated Regulatory Branch and our mission to support an energetic economy across the Mid-Atlantic.” ?? As currently designed, the bridge replacement will incorporate reinforced pier foundations, pier protection islands, and six dolphins, to permanently impact approximately 12.71 acres of the tidal Patapsco River. The Baltimore District Regulatory Branch previously issued two permit verifications in 2024 for preliminary construction activities, explosive demolition, and removal of the remaining bridge structures and continues to participate in weekly interagency meetings on the project. ?? "This mission is special because it highlights the selflessness, teamwork, and professionalism of USACE, coming together for a community at a moment's notice." ???? US Army Capt. Anthony Adams, a project engineer, is serving as a public affairs liaison for the USACE response to the #CaliforniaWildfires, one of nearly a dozen civilian and uniformed Baltimore District personnel supporting this mission. ? The Los Angeles County Department of Public Works, in partnership with six locally affected jurisdictions, has been working with wildfire survivors to collect Rights of Entry, establish safe debris haul routes, and coordinate the responsible transport and disposal of fire ash and other fire-related debris. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s removal of household hazardous materials has paved the way for this next phase, where #USACE begins residential debris removal. ?? USACE anticipates that most eligible properties enrolled in the federal debris removal program will be cleared within a year, with a majority expected to be completed well before that deadline. ???? When George Washington was appointed commander in chief of the Continental Army, the Congress also authorized his request for a chief engineer, anticipating the upcoming fortifications, roadways, and surveys needed for battling British forces. This #PresidentsDay, we honor the leader behind America’s first #engineer officers, commissioned 250 years ago this June. ?? The role of chief engineer, first held by Col. Richard Gridley, and his team of engineers’ work was found to be so crucial throughout the Revolutionary War that it was resolved by Congress to continue the formation of a “corps of engineers.” In the 250 years since that appointment, USACE has developed into the worldwide #workforce it is today, the home of projects bolstering #economic growth, #environmental resilience, and #military strength. ?? Seen here: a black and white photograph circa 1909 of the Washington Monument, a #USACE project, part of the Harris & Ewing photograph collection at the Library of Congress. #corpsofengineers #georgewashington #history
