Meet Olena, a Ukrainian living in Rzeszow, Poland and working as a protection monitor with UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency. Motivated by the situation unfolding in her country, Olena wanted to use her passion for helping others to give back to her fellow country men and women who were forced to flee their homes. As a protection monitor, Olena is stationed at the Przemy?l train station in Poland, where she greets and gets to know Ukrainians arriving in the country. She collects critical information about where refugees are going, their protection status, whether they are employed and if their children are enrolled in school — all vital information for UNHCR to deliver the best possible care and protection. During Ramadan, the challenges of displacement can become even more pronounced. This is the case for 5-year-old Jad, a Syrian refugee living in Jordan’s Za'atari refugee camp. Nearly 40% of refugees in Jordan experience food insecurity and an estimated 88% of Syrian refugee families are not able to cover the cost of everyday essentials. In light of these challenges, UNHCR and other humanitarian organizations intensify their efforts during Ramadan to provide lifesaving support to refugees — including food assistance, healthcare services and mental health resources. ??: ? “[The night represented a moment of] solidarity, bridge-building and renewal for refugees and displaced people around the world," says Suzanne Ehlers, Executive Director and CEO of USA for UNHCR. Last week, USA for UNHCR brought a sense of community to life through its second annual Faith-Bridge Iftar for Refugees. The Iftar served as a space for reflection on some of the world’s most urgent crises, while reinforcing faith’s powerful role in uplifting refugees. Last night, faith-based organizations, UN permanent missions, consuls general and humanitarian partners came together in New York to break fast during the holy month of Ramadan and discuss how faith-based organizations can support refugee women and girls. Hosted by USA for UNHCR, Islamic Relief USA, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and the Society of Foreign Consuls, the iftar explored the needs of women and girls in situations of forced displacement and how faith-based organizations provide culturally sensitive support to help empower women to thrive and rebuild their lives with dignity. “We know that investing in refugee women and girls is an investment in the health and wellbeing of their entire community,” says Suzanne Ehlers, Executive Director and CEO of USA for UNHCR. “In challenging times, our faith can be a source of comfort and it can also spur us to act. I’m grateful to our faith-based partners for their action and the care we deliver together to refugee women and girls fleeing violence globally.”

For nearly a decade, Yemen has faced one of the world's worst humanitarian crises. Escalation of conflict, ongoing insecurity, embargoes and a collapsed economy have pushed an estimated 80% of the population in Yemen below the poverty line. Abdullah is one of these people. Before being forced to flee his home, Abdullah was able to support his family, but life in Yemen's Al-Jarad camp has been difficult to navigate. Due to limited job opportunities, Abdullah took a job at a local car wash—a role that took a toll on his health from prolonged exposure to vehicle emissions. Undeterred, Abdullah transitioned to selling brooms, which his wife carefully crafted and marketed in nearby villages. Despite their combined efforts, the profit of 2,000 Yemeni rials ($8 USD) per broom barely meets their family's financial needs. In the face of such hardship, cash assistance from UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, has been a lifeline for Abdullah, offering him and his family immediate financial relief. This support has given them a chance to rebuild their lives with dignity and hope. "It’s a step forward, a chance to think about tomorrow rather than just survive today."
