UPDATE: The situation in the Democratic Republic of the Congo (DRC) has become more dire than ever! Conditions for displaced people in the DRC continue to worsen daily as attacks on sites for the internally displaced people increase, resources run dry and many are unable to meet their most urgent needs without humanitarian assistance. Over the course of just a few days, more 20,000 people crossed into Burundi, fleeing violence in eastern DRC. While countries like Burundi are generously hosting these refugees, resources are limited and refugees are living in extremely challenging conditions — with overcrowding, insufficient shelter and WASH infrastructure presenting public health and protection risks. ??: ? “I think it's important that we sometimes cut through the facts and the figures and the bureaucracy and the politics and really keep our eye on what is the heart of the matter here, and that is individual human beings who are forced to flee," says Kevin Allen. Originally from Colorado, humanitarian Kevin Allen has been working to ensure the safety and success of refugees around the world since joining UNHCR, the UN Refugee Agency, in 2004. Today, he serves as UNHCR's country representative in Poland, leading protection efforts for Ukrainian refugees. "Our job is to make sure that people get the protection and the legal status that they merit after fleeing persecution and war and then to help the most vulnerable, the refugees in the shadows who may fall through the cracks," he shares.
