The Senate has become increasingly worried about the recent spike in cargo theft and held a hearing on February 27 to explore solutions, bringing in witnesses from trucking, rail, retail, and logistics. During the hearing, the witnesses come up with the following solutions: ? Enacting the Household Goods Shipping Consumer Protection Act - initially proposed by Sen. Deb Fischer (R-Neb.), the bill would restore the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA)'s authority to issue civil penalties against bad actors in the trucking industry, and require brokers, freight forwarders, and carriers to provide a valid business address before obtaining operating authority. ? Enacting the Safeguarding Our Supply Chains Act - originally introduced by Rep. David G. Valadao (R-Calif.) in the 118th Congress, the bill would improve coordination between federal agencies and state/local law enforcement to combat cargo theft. ? Creating a Supply Chain Crime Coordination Center & Federal Task Force - this would establish a federal task force to coordinate efforts to detect, disrupt, and deter organized theft groups in trucking, rail, and intermodal systems and support increased funding for dedicated federal prosecutors to handle cargo theft cases. Do you think any of these measures will have a significant effect in combating cargo theft or do we need other measures put in place?

???????????? ???????????????? ???? ???????????? ???????????????????? ???????? ?????????????? ???????????????????? ?????????????? ?????? ?????????????????????????? ?????????????????? Texas and South Carolina are among the states that issued emergency declarations this week because of the harsh winter in the states' territory. The reliefs in Texas will benefit carriers providing direct assistance to the delivery of propane and home heating oils to storage facilities and homes. In South Carolina, the state decided to extend the waiver to maintenance and restoration of utility services as well as the uninterrupted transportation of essential goods, equipment, and products to and from the impacted areas. On Thursday, Feb. 20, FMCSA expanded its lists of affected states covered under the regional emergency to include Colorado, Iowa, Montana, Nebraska, North Dakota, Virginia and Wyoming.?? Drivers and motor carriers in the 7 states and the states included in the previous regional emergency are relieved from maximum driving time requirements.

The difficult market conditions in trucking have led to a large number of companies being forced to shut down. Last year we saw approximately 88,000 trucking companies close their doors, a number almost identical compared to to 2023. But when we're talking about freight brokerages, the year 2024 saw 3,104 companies shut down, compared to 2,395 in 2023 - a 29.6% YoY increase. It's not a good outlook on the industry to see these numbers, but we will have to pivot and find ways to stay afloat, at least until we see a market uptick. Many experts forecasted that 2025 would be a good year for the trucking industry, but the same thing was said about 2024 and the improvements were not significant. Do you think 2025 is finally the year when trucking hits the ground running after a dry post-pandemic run?

?????????????? ???????? ???????????? ??????,?????? ???????? ???? ?? ?????????? ?????????? ???? ???????????????????????? Danny Ramon - the head of intelligence and response with Overhaul - commented on the news and emphasized the thieves' ability to adapt to the market and target specific products. He mentioned how eggs weren't a typical cargo theft product, but since egg prices are expected to increase 20% within the year, with overall food prices forecasted to rise by 2.2%, they became an attractive target for thieves. He also added how thieves are now focused on a 'criminal-to-consumer' model, which earns them better profits than if they had to work with intermediaries. Ramon said that there is no quick and easy solution for cargo theft, but companies should keep up with market trends to help better understand what commodities are currently appealing to thieves. Do you think that seeing more cargo theft on essential products is a bad sign for the economy or is it just a temporary market thing?

?????????? ?????????????? ?????????? ?????????????? ???? ?????????????????????? ?????????????????? ?????? ?????????? President Donald Trump signed an executive order Saturday that will impose 25% tariffs on imports from Mexico and Canada, along with an additional 10% tariffs on goods from China. He also tariffed Canadian energy imports by 10%. Trump declared on his social platform - TruthSocial - that he is applying the tariffs "because of the major threat of illegal aliens and deadly drugs killing our Citizens, including fentanyl”. Canada and Mexico declared that they're prepared to impose retaliatory tariffs for US goods entering their countries. Experts say that most of the financial burden will be placed on US customers, with foreign companies coming in second. Trump is also doing this in an effort to bring back manufacturing jobs to the US, however, doing this will take a long time and the consequences may be significant. Do you agree with the tariffs being implemented or does the US have more to lose than gain from this?
