When we started PCBA in 2020, we bought our first selective solder machine for this specific job. Little did we know, I’d end up adding another one, and now these bad boys are running almost every day! We got a repeat order of this job, and I just had to film it. It fills the gratitude tank Shaun Lewis and I talked about today on his post. It helps me to remember where I started and where I am today. Why Selective Soldering? Tight Spaces: The spacing between the pins and the pads (you'll see the final photos at the end of the video) is incredibly tight. Double-Sided SMT with THT Parts: Our selective soldering machine is built for jobs with double sided surface mount (SMT) with through-hole technology (THT) parts on double-sided boards. Specialized Tips: I’m using the Hentec Industries / RPS Automation 2.5mm tip. It’s the only one we have that can reach the necessary spots on this board without knocking off the nearby surface mount parts. Increased Output: This machine has boosted our production by 100 fold! Average speed 3 seconds per pin. When you have a connector, it really shines as it goes even faster. We split our flux spray and solder up a lot as we like to have fresh flux when we solder. Quality Improvement: Consistent and reliable solder joints mean fewer mistakes and higher quality products. Efficiency Boost: Our operators can now focus on inspection after soldering instead of juggling insertion and soldering at the same time. Special Thanks: A big thank you to Brad Kendall for recommending the Vector 300 machine. It’s been a lifesaver and a quality upgrade for our production line! I met the President today... The President of the SMTA Michigan chapter! My buddy Kyle Keydel came by today. He's the current President of SMTA Michigan. We talked about the importance of ESD equipment in protecting SMT components in PCBA manufacturing. It's fascinating how even a small amount of voltage can cause damage. All this ESD protection sometimes feels like overkill. However, experts say even the little things like wearing smocks in production lines to prevent static-related damages can have huge implications if you don't. As technology advances, the need for more ESD protection and better handling procedures grows each year. The next step for us is to implement humidity controlled rooms, although I am bracing myself for the impact on the water and electric bill! On another note, today marks Kyle's birthday. I'm told in business it's better to lead with your head and not with your heart. I'm terrible at it, I think it's because I had such a different experience growing up of what business was like that it's very difficult for me to even want to change. Nothing reminds me more of that when like today I got to see my buddy Yash Sutariya from Saturn Electronics Corporation today. We had a combined tour for a customer wanting an 18-layer PCB & PCBA made in the USA. Yash and his father Nagji have helped our company stay alive. I can honestly say I don't know if we would be here today if it wasn't for them. There were so many times where our machines would go down or we didn't have enough money to buy chemicals and Yash his dad Nagji would let us run our work through his lines. There were times when I could repay but it was definitely them helping us more than we helped them. It's the one thing I miss the most about PCB manufacturing is the camaraderie you have between "competitors". I don't know if it was just because there were so few left of us, we had to, but it doesn't feel that way with the PCBA people. There are a few but with circuit board manufacturing we all helped each other. I'm hoping I can bring some of that mentality to the EMS world. I have competitors scared to like any of my posts even though I have pressed like on some of theirs they don't to mine. Maybe they just think my content is trash lol. For those of you that have treated me like a friend and not a competitor (you know who you are) I really appreciate it. It takes me back to a time of what I grew up knowing how business was with your so called "competition". Where it was about the family and employees of companies and not just an order & revenue game. It's why I continue to support the Printed Circuit Board Association of America (PCBAA) to fight for guys like my buddy Yash and his family for what they have done for mine. #PCBManufacturing #EMS #BusinessRelationships #SMT #Support #PCBAA
