In the United States, over 2.5 million children, or 3% of all children are in kinship care. Kinship care is when children are raised by relatives, such as grandparents, aunts, uncles, siblings and other extended family members. Kinship caregivers may face challenges such as financial difficulties, legal issues, and exposure to potentially harmful behaviors. They may also experience conflicting emotions, such as being unable to stop a child’s mother from making terrible decisions or not knowing how long they will serve as a caregiver. Urban Surf 4 Kids supports kinship caregivers with respite, investment into the healing journey of the child(ren) in their care, and inclusion in the free outdoor-based programs designed to encourage positive behavior and healthy relationships.
