关于我们
Building the Future from the Ground Up!! US Biochar Initiative is a not-for-profit organization promoting the sustainable production and use of biochar through research, policy, technology and implementation! Biochars are fine-grained, highly porous charcoals that help soils retain nutrients and water. Biochar saves water. Biochar reduces dependency on chemical inputs. Biochar is an investment, not a cost. Biochar is decarbonizes the built environment and heavy industry. Biochar carbon can be used in construction, as filler, as pigment, as building element to reduce embodied carbon in everyday items. We can utilize above ground resources to solve many of our carbon removal and carbon management concerns. USBI hosts meetings, conferences and workshops to discover practical uses of biochar in North America. Recent projects include: market studies; education materials; networking; demonstration projects; and coordination with sectors interested in research, production, and use of biochar including agriculture, forestry and wood product, biomass energy, organics recycling, building products and ecosystem services. USBI is a partner with the International Biochar Initiative and collaborates with other biochar organizations around the world. USBI is managed by a group of volunteers representing every aspect of biochar production and use. Join USBI at our next North American Biochar Conference, September 2025, in Minneapolis, MN. USA

Big news! Washington State University has launched a six-year study to explore how #biochar, biochar-enhanced fertilizers, and #hemp can improve soil health and crop yields,?funded by a $5 million grant from the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE). ? And USBI is proud to be a partner institution in the project! ? Our role is focused on biochar sourcing, development of biochar enhanced fertilizers, and experimental design, with a focus on economically viable applications. We’re also working closely with Oregon Biochar Solutions and Renovo Sustainable Products. The entire project will focus on crops like wheat, potatoes, corn, and chickpeas, while also examining ecological benefits. Read more about the study ?? https://lnkd.in/g8uz63ye

?? Let’s get ready to ruuuuuumble ?? ?? No secret here: I love biochar. And I waste no opportunity to show the world just what an incredible, circular, holistic solution biochar is. ??♂? So when my friend and Direct Air Capture veteran Martin Freimüller, CEO of Octavia Carbon, challenged me to a public Biochar vs DAC debate, it was a no-brainer. ?? This is going to be different to anything you have seen or listened to so far. It will be live, it will be interactive (yes, you get to participate and vote!), and a winner shall emerge. ?? For the biocharries out there, here is our battle song (thank you David Andersson): https://lnkd.in/dhHxC9XH ?? I need your help: what information would you take into the debate? What are the strongest arguments, data points, statistics you have on Biochar? Share in the comments! ???? Eve Tamme will moderate to make sure we keep it punchy (not literally), informative, and fun. ?? So join us on April 7th at 8am PST / 11am EST / 5pm CEST for this special edition of the CDR Policy Scoop Live SHOWDOWN: BIOCHAR vs DAC: https://lnkd.in/dVzYCUYp ?Disclaimer: I also love DAC, and Martin loves Biochar. Yes, we each have strong conviction behind our respective pathways, and think that more funding, demand & attention should go towards it, and we will be arguing hard for this. However, the primary objective of this debate is to inform & entertain, not to create division. We are both convinced that it takes ALL CDR methods to reach gigaton scale. Biochar standards are evolving—and USBI is helping lead the way! USBI has been leading an effort to develop an American National Standard (ANSI) to help biochar scale as a climate change solution. Clear material standards are key needs to grow any industry. The latest advancements in biochar standards are shaping how we measure its impact, from carbon sequestration to soil health benefits.? Chris Wiberg writes for Biomass Magazine about where we’re at, including: ?? The need for new biochar industry standards ?? An update on the USBI / ANSI standard under development ?? Efforts to harmonize international biochar standards through the International Standards Organization (ISO) Read the full article: https://lnkd.in/eBSBZzBT ? What do you think is the biggest challenge—or opportunity—in advancing biochar standards? ?? Share with us below!

The City of Minneapolis is making history by becoming the first city in North America to own and operate a #biochar facility! ?? The facility will have the capacity to: ? Process over 3,000 tons of wood waste ? Produce over 500 tons of biochar Construction on the facility is expected to begin this spring with biochar production beginning in the summer or early fall. Learn more ?? https://lnkd.in/gst2ktby (We’re proud to bring this year’s North American Biochar Conference to the Minneapolis to explore innovation, and partner with the Minnesota Biochar Initiative to learn more about what’s happening on-the-ground).?
