A lot of work goes into making artillery the King of Battle ??. Our talented Army Civilian workforce works tirelessly to produce the finest artillery and mortar systems for the men and women of America’s military. Seen here, fourth-year Machinist Apprentice Corey Scully-Irvin operates a lathe to machine a 105mm howitzer. The machinist apprenticeship program is a four-year apprenticeship where apprentices work full-time, learning the craft of cannon making while earning a two-year degree in advanced manufacturing technology and achieving the title of journeyman machinist. #TeamWatervliet #WorkforceWednesday

This morning we joined our community parterns in honoring the life and service of Joe King McLaughlin at the Albany County Honor a Veteran ceremony held at the North Albany American Legion Post 1610. Originally from Waynesboro, Mississippi, Joe served in the U.S. Army from June 1943 to May 1946 in the European theater of World War II. Joe was a Technician Fifth Grade in the 3989th Motor Transport Company. The 3989th was part of the famed Red Ball Express, the Army's massive logistics effort that supplied front line forces with ammunition, fuel, food and fresh soldiers during the intense fighting of the Battle of the Bulge. After the war, Joe settled in Albany to raise his family. Joe had a 33 year career in civil engineering with Callanan Industries as well as running a local neighborhoold store, Laughlin's Grocery Store, with his beloved wife. We thank the McLaughlin family for sharing Joe's remarkable life and legacy with our community.

Getting modernized equipment is exciting, but where does your unit's old equipment go when it's broken or out-of-date? The Army Modernization and Equipping Conference brings together sustainment leaders and experts multiple times a year to answer that very question. Last week, AMEC attendees heard updates on R2E, the Operational Readiness Program and a new method for demand planning before breaking into working groups to solve cascading and equipping problems across the Army. Ready for prime time! Arsenal leadership officially cut the ribbon on the new horizontal heat treat system this week. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers project replaced the arsenal's aging system without disrupting workflow. The new system improves quality and expands the arsenal's capabilities and capacity. Special thanks to the men and women from USACE New York District, members of #TeamWatervliet and contractors for the great work on this project!

Josh Shappy was recognized with a Commander's Coin today for his recent work to improve the safety of the newly installed horizontal heat treat furnace. Shappy noticed that the hard stop arms on the new furnace could be difficult to see and posed a safety risk to workers around the furnace. The arms prevent a loose tube from falling off the furnace should it come loose during operation. Using his skills and on his free time, Shappy designed a 3D printed cap that slips over the ends of the arms, increasing their visibility and reducing the risk of contact injuries. Great job Josh! #TeamWatervliet #safetyfirst #ContinuousImprovement #ArmyCivilian
