**GIA READER** Since 2020, Grantmakers in the Arts (GIA) has been monitoring how our members are adapting grantmaking practices in response to the pandemic and the push for racial justice. Our 2023 survey shows a mixed picture: while there's a slowdown in the increase of support for arts and culture, many funders are maintaining their levels of support. General operating support and flexibility in fund use have decreased, but there's good news with increased multi-year support and continued strong backing for BIPOC artists and organizations. GIA stresses the need to keep these progressive changes alive, advocating for sustained commitment to marginalized communities, including artists with disabilities and Trans artists. GIA highlights the importance of shared experiences and mutual support among its members to continue fostering equity and resilience in the arts sector. It is exasperating that some white individuals fail to comprehend the reasons behind the distrust felt by us. Our distrust is deeply rooted in the enduring legacy of slavery, segregation, and systemic racism. White privilege and unconscious biases hinder white people from understanding racial injustices, making it difficult for them to grasp the basis for this distrust. I encourage you to please read: “Everything You Already Know About Your Own Racism and How to Do Better White Women With a Guide to Start the Unlearning~ Regina Jackson and Saira Rao

'47% of all writers in the UK come from the most privileged starting points... it so important that we start early to create more pathways.' Martin Sheen makes such a powerful case for inclusion. This statistic underscores a disheartening reality: the arts and culture sector in the UK is not representative of the diverse society it serves. The problems have actually got worse over the last decade, not better. This is why we’re feeling quietly optimistic after hearing Lisa Nandy speak about arts education at the Labour Party conference. Change might be on the horizon ? And change is essential - we know the current system isn’t working and the creative and cultural industries are at risk of stagnation without drawing on a wide range of individuals with different experiences, thoughts and ideas. We have extensive experience in connecting education with the creative and cultural industries. It’s a personal passion that unites us. If you’d like to hear more about what we do in this space, or how we can help you understand pathways into these sectors, drop us a line: [email protected] ??
Everyone deserves access to jobs in the arts, says Michael Sheen. Here’s how he’s making that happen for underrepresented communities: https://t.ted.com/CkG00X6

Human beings have been telling stories for tens, possibly hundreds of thousands of years - long before we were able to write them down. Yet as Michael Sheen so eloquently talks about in his TED Conferences talk, we have created a situation where only some stories can be told and heard. This not only deprives people of the opportunity to fully explore and use their talent, but also wider society from being able to experience and understand the richness of experience and creativity that exists in this country. This isn't just the case in the creative arts. Within research and innovation there are significant gaps in pretty much every protected characteristic - especially gender and ethnicity. Similarly there is significant underrepresentation of people from working class backgrounds. And then there's leadership... The opportunity to shape and change the world by fulfilling our potential storytelling, innovation, leadership, research should never be dependent on where we were born, our background, or our gender. As a research professional and entrepreneur my mission has always been to help others see their value - not just of what they do, but of who they are and where they have come from. To help them find and use their voice - and to support them to have that voice heard. It would be great to hear stories here about the work that is going on to expand the range of opportunities that are open to people from underrepresented and disadvantaged groups, and the impact this has had. #Research #Innovation #EDI
