Do you like Smashing Pumpkins? Our scientists, engineers and students recently tried to avoid that during the Soldier Center’s first annual Pumpkin Drop Challenge as part of STEM activities tied to disciplines and technologies here. Teams of students ranging from 2nd through 12th grade used a pumpkin and other supplied materials to create a parachute and rigging system to safely land their pumpkin after a drop from an elevated platform. Some were successful and some created the ingredients for pumpkin pie. Congratulations to all who competed. #BeAllYouCanBe #ForgeTheFuture #TeamDEVCOM #sciencebehindthesoldier #STEM Inaugural Pumpkin Airdrop STEM Challenge Soars at NSSC https://lnkd.in/eCQUYB92

Massachusetts Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll, along with members of the Massachusetts Military Asset and Security Strategy Task Force, recently visited the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command (DEVCOM) Soldier Center at the Natick Soldier Systems Center. The MASS-TF was formed in 2012 to protect and strengthen the Commonwealth’s six military installations. Lt. Governor Driscoll toured several unique facilities including the newly completed Monti Research Facility, met with the talented workforce at DEVCOM Soldier Center and learned more about the unique functions that NSSC provides for not just our Army but all the Services. In the picture below, Jeremy Whitsitt, (second from right) Deputy to the Associate Director of the Soldier Effectiveness Directorate, briefs Lt. Governor Kim Driscoll (third from right) and members of the MASS-TF on the capabilities of the newly completed Monti Research Facility, an 80,600 sq ft state-of-the-art laboratory for understanding, predicting, and optimizing human performance effects of technological, material, nutritional and behavioral system innovations on the individual warfighter and squad, as DEVCOM Soldier Center Director Doug Tamilio (right) looks on. The building will be officially dedicated in memory of Army Sergeant First Class Jared Monti, a Massachusetts native who was posthumously awarded the Medal of Honor for actions in Afghanistan in 2006. #TeamDEVCOM #sciencebehindthesoldier #ForgeTheFuture

DEVCOM Soldier Center hosts Eric M. Bailey, a leading expert on human relationships and improving work culture. NATICK, Mass. – The Culture Engagement Team at the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center, or DEVCOM SC, recently hosted Eric M. Bailey, a best-selling author and renowned expert on improving work culture, communication and human relationships. Bailey led two workshop sessions that provided important insights into how fear of failure can hinder innovation and how the need to always be right can hinder constructive communication. The presentations included fun, interactive exercises that broke down communication barriers and fear of failure through laughter and connection. During the sessions, participants learned how to try to abandon their fear of failure and their need to be perfect. Fear of failure, fear of trying new ways of doing things, the need to always be right, and endless debating all negatively impact productivity, innovation and employee relationships. All these things contribute to inertia and to good people leaving organizations. Hosting Bailey was part of the DEVCOM SC’s Culture Engagement Team’s larger efforts aimed at creating strong interpersonal relationships and communication among employees. The team works to create a sense of community, connection and trust. The team’s efforts include surveys, focus groups, wargaming efforts and workshops. NATICK, Mass. – If you work at the U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center, or DEVCOM SC, chances are you know Beverly Lange. Lange is a friendly presence on post, and she is known for her human resource expertise — including everything from recruitment to retirement. Lange recently celebrated her 50th anniversary of working at DEVCOM SC, an organization of about 700 civilian employees. Lange, who everyone calls “Bev,” is known for her pleasant demeanor, outstanding work ethic, extensive knowledge of human resources, and her willingness to answer any and all questions. She is extremely modest about the important role she plays at DEVCOM SC, but her positive impact on the organization and the working lives of DEVCOM SC employees cannot be overstated. Douglas Tamilio, director of DEVCOM SC, has high praise for Lange. “Bev’s dedication and hard work, combined with her unparalleled human resource expertise, have contributed greatly to our top-notch organization,” said Tamilio. “Her work enables our employees to focus on ensuring our warfighters are protected, optimized and lethal.” #Soldier #USARMY ##Beallyoucanbe

NATICK, Mass. – The U.S. Army Combat Capabilities Development Command Soldier Center, or DEVCOM SC, recently hosted an event for student employees. The event aimed to help student employees get to know DEVCOM SC subject matter experts and other student employees better. The event also provided them with information about DEVCOM SC’s mission and career opportunities. Virginia Rettie, a program analyst in DEVCOM SC’s G-1 Human Resources Office and the lead for the Student Employment and Recent Graduate Program, organized the event. “The student mixer provided an opportunity for all interns to tour our labs, learn more about our mission, and cultivate friendships among their peers, which instills a sense of community,” said Rettie. During the event, student employees were given an overview of DEVCOM SC and information about DEVCOM SC’s mission to ensure the nation’s warfighters are protected, optimized and lethal. Students were provided overviews about DEVCOM SC’s Soldier Effectiveness Directorate, Soldier Protection Directorate and Soldier Sustainment Directorate. They also toured some of DEVCOM SC’s world class facilities and capabilities, including the Textile Equipment and Prototype Shop, Gut Microbiome Lab, Additive Manufacturing Lab, Combat Feeding, and the Design, Pattern and Prototype Studio.
