  • More career fair conversations and fun! The Omaha District attended two other career fairs recently, including the North Dakota State University Fall Career Expo, Sept. 25, in Fargo, North Dakota, and the Creighton University Fall Semeter All Majors Career Fair, Sept. 27, in Omaha, Nebraska. There were many excellent candidates at both events, and several will be contacted for online interviews for summer internship or full-time positions. (And of course our team enjoyed meeting Thundar, the NDSU bison mascot!) #OmahaUSACE #JoinOurHerd

  • The Omaha District has been fairly busy lately attending multiple career events to meet with prospective interns and employees. First, Omaha District representatives attended both days of the South Dakota State University Jerome J. Lohr College of Engineering Career Fair, Sept. 18-19, in Brookings, S.D. The following week, on Sept. 24, the Omaha District and St. Paul Districts both participated in the University of North Dakota Fall 2024 STEM Career Expo in Grand Folks, N.D. And the next day, representatives remained in North Dakota to attend the United Tribes Technical College Career Festival in Bismarck. These are just a few of the many events we attend annually to network and discuss the many opportunities available within USACE. • The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, has initiated three new Continuing Authorities Program pilot projects to support communities in South Dakota, Nebraska, and Colorado. These efforts are part of a national pilot program, announced last month by the Assistant Secretary of the Army, Civil Works, that will support and partner with 12 rural or economically disadvantaged communities across the United States. The three pilot projects selected in the Omaha District’s area of responsibility will serve: - Flandreau Santee Sioux Tribe, South Dakota: To reduce the risk of erosion affecting cultural use of the area, restore riverine habitat and reduce overland pollution flows from agricultural lands. - Omaha Tribe, Nebraska: To reduce the flood risk to local water wells. - City of Boulder (Open Space and Mountain Parks), Colorado: To restore floodplains and wetlands on a publicly owned site near an area that is historically and culturally significant to the Arapaho and Cheyenne Nations. • Zach Haddix, a civil engineer with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, Omaha District, led a public stakeholder meeting, Sept. 17, 2024, in Jamestown, North Dakota. The meeting focused on Sustainable Rivers Program opportunities available at Pipestem Dam and Lake, and along the James River. USACE, the National Weather Service and the North Dakota Game and Fish Department presented on Pipestem Dam operations and history, as well as basin information. Following the presentations, participants held open house style discussions on the potential opportunities and interests at Pipestem and in the James River Basin. Potential opportunities may include reservoir pool management strategies to promote nearshore vegetation to improve fish spawning and rearing habitat, releases to mimic natural flows that existed prior to regulated flows from the dam, and downstream flows to improve river flood plain connectivity to restore riparian and off channel habitats to the extent possible. The Sustainable Rivers Program explores federal projects for opportunities to promote environmental benefits through operations. A proposal for Pipestem Reservoir was accepted, and the scope includes water quality sampling, an update to the water quality model and stakeholder meetings to gauge interests and opportunities at Pipestem and along the James River. #OmahaUSACE #BuildingStrong #Essayons

  • On Sept. 5, 2024, more than 250 people gathered for the Topping Out of the upcoming new Helo Tactical Response Force (TRF) and Operations/Aircraft Maintenance Unit (AMU), located at F. E. Warren Air Force Base, Cheyenne, Wyoming. More than 100 signatures were added to the patriotic star-spangled steel beam that was raised and put into place. The ceremony, a construction tradition, signified completion of the steel structure, and celebrated passing the 50% completion mark of the overall national defense project. The 37th Helicopter Squadron located at F.E. Warren AFB, will use the facility with the new MH139A Grey Wolf helicopter. The facility will bed down, maintain, and provide alert capabilities for this mission. It will also facilitate ground response forces. This project includes the construction of 134,000 sq. ft. of vertical construction with supporting site facilities and infrastructure accommodating 237 full-time military and civilian support staff. The facility will also include room for maintenance and an aircraft simulator. Associated site improvements include airfield apron, helipad, and other airfield amenities. The project is expected to be complete by July 2025. #OmahaUSACE #BuildingStrong #Essayons
