In 2024, our District permitted the dredging of approximately 2.6 million cubic yards of sediment. That’s enough to fill Fenway Park four and half times! (Go Sox!) Dredging permitting processes are unique in New England as the EPA and USACE regulate open-water disposal of dredged material under Section 103 of the Marine Protection, Research and Sanctuaries Act (MPRSA) in addition to authorities under Section 10 of the Rivers and Harbors Act and Section 404 of the Clean Water Act. In Long Island Sound, MPRSA applies to federal and large non-federal dredging projects due to the Ambro Amendment. This is the only place in the U.S. with this distinction!

New England District Commander Col. Justin Pabis and Bill Phelan, Quality Assurance Representative in the Devens Resident Office visit the Josias River Dredging project in Ogunquit, ME, last week. The project consists of routine maintenance dredging of approximately 10,700 cubic yards (CY) of material from both the channel and anchorages within the federal navigation project. The channel will be dredged to a depth of 7 feet from the seaward end to the inner harbor.
